EFFECTS OF WORK FROM HOME ON WELL-BEING OF EMPLOYEES

ACROSS INDUSTRIES IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION

Ligaya G. Pineda

Work from home (WFH), also known as telecommuting or e-commuting, is a work status
that is increasingly common among companies nowadays as information and communication
continue to grow. It is a work arrangement between the employer and the employee where the latter
works outside the office, often at home, or other venues while communicating to other members of
the organization through technology. This has been a practice by companies, allowing employees
to substitute some or all of their usual work hours to be performed outside of their offices (Allen,
Golden, & Shockley, 2015). Many researches on this subject matter were focused on the
management and not on the side of the employees. Problems relating to the practice remained
unresolved (Weinert, Maier, Laumer, & Wetzel, 2015) in spite of its widespread acceptance. Over
time, the literatures failed to come up with consistent conclusions, even the intricacies of the
consequences (Bailey & Kurkland, 2002; Gajendran & Harrison, 2007) of WFH, hence, this study.

The existing literatures do not clearly point out the effect of WFH on the well-being of
employees. Allen et al. (2015), for instance, calls for a research evidence that covers the effects of
telecommuting on well-being of the employees. Given the increasing significance of WFH, a
deeper understanding on how this practice affects professional employees’ well-being is very
relevant. This is relatively new to the Philippine work setting, hence, intensive research is deemed
necessary as this practice is becoming widespread since the Work from Home Law (Republic Act
No. 11165) was promulgated on December 20, 2018.

This study is guided by the following research questions (a) what is the WFH status (full time
and part time) of the employees across personal characteristics, work-related, and motivational
factors? (b) What is the well-being of the employees across WFH status; (c) What are the effects of
WFH status on employee’s well-being in terms of work-life balance, career growth, and physical
and emotional health? and (d) How will the personal characteristics, work-related, motivational
factors, and WFH status affect the employees’ well-being?

A self-administered online survey instrument will be provided to a random sample of 400

professional employees across industries and occupations who work from home in the National
Capital Region which will also be substantiated with online interviews. Three research designs will
be performed: descriptive, comparative, and causal explanatory. Descriptive statistics, analysis of
variance, and multiple regression will be employed to analyze the data. Some diagnostic tests will
also be done.

The study will significantly contribute to the professional employees and the organizations
that are practicing WFH. Employees will be more aware and will have insights on ways to further
excel in their career and take care of their well-being. At the same time, this will give an
opportunity for the employers to enhance designs on WFH, to develop control systems, and
formulate strategies that could give benefit for both the company and its people.
