Senate Showdown
By: Cailyn Dao, Reporter
March 16, 44 BC

The last chapter of Julius Caesar’s tyranny ended on the 15th of March, when he was brutally
stabbed by a group of senators in the Capitol.
The unexpected death occurred moments
before an important meeting in the Capitol.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss
important matters concerning the Senate. In
addition, Caesar’s coronation was set to
take place that day. Many members of the
Senate resented the imbalance of power
Caesar held. The senators saw Caesar’s
presence as an opportunity to assassinate
him. Some of the assailants were identified
as: Brutus, Cassius, Casca, Decius,
Metellus, Trebonius, Cinna, and Ligarius.

Calpurnia, the wife of Caesar, mournfully stated, “I wanted him to stay away, this head of mine
conjured up the most awful dream of his death. I know it was a warning, I just know it.”
In the Capitol, senators gathered around Caesar and bludgeoned him, turning it into a bloody
scene.
A senator part of the conspiracy, Brutus, stated, “Ambitions debt is paid.” displaying how many
of those known to Caesar held ill-mannered feelings towards him. Many believed his power was
growing out of control, which led up to Caesar’s demise.
Cassius, a main conspirator asserted “Liberty, freedom, enfranchisement! We are freed of the
grasp of Caesar’s power.”, emphasizing the fact Julius Caesar was a cruel leader of Rome.
