The true Muslim believes should also believe in all the books and revelations of the
almighty Allah.

They were guiding light which the messengers of Allah received to show their respective
people the right path of Allah, Islam. In the Holy Qur’an a special reference is made to the books
of Ibrahim, Dawud, Musa, and Isa. Their respective scriptural names are Sukhuf, Zabur, Taurat
[Torah], Injil [Gospel]. However, long before the revelation of the Qur’an to Muhammad,
p.b.u.h., according to Hammudah Abdallati, some of those books and revelations had been either
lost or corrupted, others forgotten, neglected or concealed. In line with this, Muslims believe that
the only authentic and complete book of Allah in existence today is the Qur’an. The authenticity
of the Qur’an and its comparison to the Old and New Testament are explained in great detail by
Dr. M>M Al Azami, an emeritus professor of Islamic Studies at king Sa’ud University, Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia, in his book The History of The Qur’anic Text from revelaton to compilation
(2005). Now the Indonesian edition of the book is also available.

The holy Qur’an, which is divided into thirty parts (juz), consist of 144 chgapters (surah)
of varying length, from a few lines to several pages. According to Ibn Kathir, one of the most
well knownj interpretes (mufasir) in Indonesia, there are 6.000 verses in the holy Qur’an, 77.439
wors, and not less than 321.180 letters. It was revealed in the Arabic language by Almighty Allah
to the Prophet Muhammad, p.b.u.h, with angel Gabriel as intermediary.

The Prophet Muhammad was then only forty years old when Allah advised him of his
mission. The angel Gabriel visited him on Sunday night, then on Sunday night, and on Monday
he revealed to him that he had been chosen by Allah to be prophet to receive a risalah, the
revealed message. This was in 610 C.E. at the cave of Hira, a place of retreat near Mecca where
Muhammad used to go to meditate. The five first verses revealed to him were an order to be
informed and to learn. The meaning of the verses, based on Hilali’s and Khan’s Interpretation of
the meanings of the Noble Qur’an (1996), are as follows:

1. Read! In the Name of your Lord who has created (all that exists)

2. He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).

3. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous.

4. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen.

5. He has taught man that which he knew not. (Chapter 96, verses 1-5)

Allah revelation to Muhammad succeeded one another from time to time over a period of more
than twenty years, from 610 to 632 C.E., the date of the Prophet’s death.

KEIMANAN KEPADA KITAB ALLAH: PASAL IMAN YANG KETIGA

Seorang Muslim sejati yang beriman juga harus beriman kepada semua kitab dan wahyu
Allah SWT.

Mereka adalah cahaya petunjuk yang diterima para utusan Allah untuk menunjukkan
kepada umatnya jalan yang benar menuju Allah, yaitu Islam. Dalam Al-Qur'an referensi khusus
dibuat untuk kitab Ibrahim, Dawud, Musa, dan Isa. Nama kitab sucinya masing-masing adalah
Sukhuf [suhuf], Zabur, Taurat [Taurat], Injil [Injil]. Namun, jauh sebelum diturunkannya Al-
Qur’an kepada Muhammad SAW, menurut Hammudah Abdallati, sebagian dari kitab dan wahyu
tersebut telah hilang atau dirusak, sebagian lagi dilupakan, diabaikan atau disembunyikan.
Sejalan dengan hal tersebut, umat Islam meyakini bahwa satu-satunya kitab Allah yang asli dan
lengkap yang ada saat ini adalah Al-Qur’an. Keaslian Al-Qur'an dan perbandingannya dengan
Perjanjian Lama dan Perjanjian Baru dijelaskan dengan sangat rinci oleh Dr. M>M Al Azami,
seorang pensiunan profesor Studi Islam di King Sa'ud University, Riyadh, Arab Saudi, dalam
bukunya buku Sejarah Teks Al-Qur'an dari Wahyu hingga Kompilasi (2005). Kini buku edisi
bahasa Indonesia juga telah tersedia.

Kitab Suci Al-Qur’an yang terbagi menjadi tiga puluh bagian (juz), terdiri dari 144 bab
(surat) dengan panjang yang bervariasi, dari beberapa baris hingga beberapa halaman. Menurut
Ibnu Katsir, salah seorang mufasir paling terkenal di Indonesia, terdapat 6.000 ayat dalam Al-
Qur’an, 77.439 ayat, dan tidak kurang dari 321.180 surat. Hal itu diturunkan dalam bahasa Arab
oleh Allah SWT kepada Nabi Muhammad SAW dengan malaikat Jibril sebagai perantaranya.
 Nabi Muhammad saat itu baru berusia empat puluh tahun ketika Allah memerintahkan
tentang misinya (tugas). Malaikat Jibril mengunjunginya pada hari Minggu malam, kemudian
pada hari Minggu malam, dan pada hari Senin malaikat jibril mengungkapkan kepada Nabi
Muhammad bahwa beliau telah dipilih oleh Allah menjadi Nabi untuk menerima risalah, pesan
wahyu. Peristiwa ini terjadi pada tahun 610 M di gua Hira, sebuah tempat peristirahatan dekat
Mekah dimana Muhammad biasa pergi bermeditasi (bertafakur). Lima ayat pertama yang
diwahyukan kepadanya merupakan perintah untuk menginformasikan dan mempelajari. Makna
ayat-ayat tersebut berdasarkan Tafsir Hilali dan Khan terhadap Makna Al-Qur'an (1996), adalah
sebagai berikut:

1. Baca! Dengan menyebut nama Tuhanmu yang telah menciptakan (semua yang ada)

2. Dia menciptakan manusia dari segumpal darah (darah kental yang membeku).

3. Baca! Dan Tuhanmu Maha Pemurah.

4. Yang mengajar manusia dengan perantara kalam.

5. Dia telah mengajarkan kepada manusia apa yang tidak diketahuinya. (Surat 96, ayat 1-5)

Wahyu Allah kepada Muhammad diturunkan berangsur-angsur dari waktu ke waktu selama lebih
dari dua puluh tahun, dari tahun 610 hingga 632 M, yaitu tanggal wafatnya Nabi.
