ASSIGNMENT 1 (Submit on 14/02/2023):

The objective of this assignment is to learn about the decisions that are involved in the design of steel beams and
girders.

1. The figure below shows the floor plan of a building. Use thickness of concrete slab as 15cm. You are required to
design the beams and girders. Beams have a span of 8.5m and will be subjected to uniformly distributed loading
from the floor while girders have a span of 13.5m and are subjected to concentrated loads corresponding to
reactions from beams.

• Use S355Mpa steel for all beams.

• Use normal weight concrete, with unit weight of 25Mpa.

• Use maximum deflection limits of the Eurocode 3 Code for floor systems.

• Make sure you also include the self-weight of the steel members.

• In addition to the self-weight of the floor system, consider:

o a partition load of 1.5kN/m2

o a floor finishing load of 2.7kN/m2.

o a live load of 5kN/m2.

• Assume that the slab provides adequate lateral restraint to the compression flange such that

you can develop the full plastic capacity of the beam under positive moments (top flange in

compression).

2. Prepare a table summarizing the material takeoff indicating steel shapes, total length of each shape, total weight per
shape in Kg and total weight in Kg)
