Abstract

Introduction

7-Eleven was founded in 1927 by J.C. Thompson in Dallas, Texas. Originally known as The
Southland Ice Company, the company began as an ice cream vendor, but soon expanded its
offerings to include milk, bread, and eggs on Sundays and evenings when other grocery stores
were closed. This innovative business idea proved successful and led to the development of the
modern convenience retail concept. The company's first convenience stores were called Tote'm
stores because customers wanted to "take their purchases with them." Some of these stores even
had authentic Alaskan totem poles in front of them. in 1946, the stores were renamed 7-Eleven to
reflect the new expanded hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. The company's corporate
name was changed from The Southland Corporation to 7-Eleven, Inc. in 1999.

In Malaysia, 7-Eleven is the pioneer and largest operator of 24-hour convenience stores. After
reaching 1,000 stores, 7-Eleven Malaysia introduced a unique franchise program in 2009,
becoming the first franchisor in the local market to offer existing profitable stores to franchisees.
7-Eleven stores are located in various locations throughout Malaysia, including busy commercial
districts, quiet residential areas on the outskirts of cities, gas stations, LRT stations, shopping
malls and medical facilities. The company prides itself on "always being there for you"

Each 7-Eleven store offers more than 2,200 different products, including private brands such as
Slurpee frozen drinks and Big Gulp soft drinks. In addition, the stores offer a range of services
including bill pay, cell phone top-up card sales, IDD/STD, Touch N Go top-up, internet gaming
starter packs, MOL points top-up, ink cartridge refills, photocopying, faxing, ATMs and a
bulletin board for community notices. In 2009, 7-Eleven introduced fresh-brewed coffee and
other hot beverages, as well as packaged fresh food and baked goods, to serve customers seeking
ready-to-eat hot foods. All food sold at 7-Eleven is subject to strict quality controls to ensure
taste and freshness.

As a leading local convenience store, fostering a sense of community is central to 7-Eleven's

commitment to social responsibility. To fulfill this commitment, 7-Eleven Malaysia has
established a non-profit organization called 7-Eleven Community Care. This organization is
dedicated to implementing various philanthropic initiatives and corporate social responsibility
efforts. Our belief is based on the idea of giving back to the communities in which we operate.
We are committed to supporting disadvantaged groups and promoting environmental protection
at the local level in all regions.
