WELCOME to Maryland, a small neighbourhood in the London Borough of Newham. PART 01:

quickly being surrounded by newly gentrified areas waiting to infect this community

SECTION 8 - ETHICAL PRACTICE [PAGE 3]

This project aims to tell stories with and about space, and deploy techniques from
film, literature and gaming to visualise new worlds and model the architectural and
urban possiblities of real-world applications of fantastical storytelling. However, in PART 02:
order to realise these fictional worlds, it is necessary to begin with a deep engage-
ment in the conditions of the day, as pockets of the fantastical future we want to live
in exists in the present. It is the duty of this project to extrapolate these examples CHAPTER 02 - STRUCTURE, CONSTRUCTION AND FIRE

improvement of its community use and its suitability to provide new affordable housing.
We are intending to submit a planning application in the late Summer 2023, with a determination to be

On display here is the Department of Voids, a collection around which a taxonomy of absence has grown. It started with
empty transport cases for objects that had gone missing from a Copenhagen museum’s collection. Only the shell-like con-
tainers for the objects, carefully crafted and worn from much use, remained. All information about their contents’ identity and
provenance had been lost.
The Department of Voids celebrates doubt. Firstly, by observing the ambivalence that exists within the space left by missing
objects, a space that can best be understood as a set of probabilities open to our personal projections. Secondly, through
asking what role doubt and the longing for certainty play in creating new bodies of knowledge.

Lovett confined his enquiries to the hawkers’ class of street

traders and the old, groups that no one else at the time
would have bothered to approach. Unfortunately one of the
drawbacks was that he was not a very careful recorder of
what he discovered, however he did become very adept at
persuading people from all walks of life to part with both
objects and information. He explains his technique in his
book, in which he says he avoided asking direct questions
and never told the people he spoke to what he was doing. He
pretended to be ignorant about what he was enquiring about
as he found that if they felt he knew a lot, they would either
stop talking or try to “go one better”. He also gave his alpine
plants as presents, and exchanged dolls he brought for the
less attractive handmade toys of the poor.
