Hamlet Analysis

Throughout the book of Hamlet,it is difficult to comprehend why a person would allow emotions of
anger, remorse, sorrow,or fear to take over their actions. As a result, a person may not measure the
consequences that come ahead.Unfortunately, the weak point for the main character, “Hamlet” was the
death of his father, “King Hamlet.” Not only did this alone affect Hamlet internally.Questions such as
“What or who was the cause of my father’s death?” or “Should I take my life away all at once?” lingered
in Hamlet’s head. The conflict within himself was about to become external if he did not reflect on his
future decisions. Therefore, the book of Hamlet provides us with an overall message that endurance is the
strength that we must all maintain so fear does not overtake our weaknesses. For instance, the author
mentions “The sling and arrows of outrageous fortune,or to take arms against a sea of troubles.”(Line 59)
This proves that Hamlet was previously indecisive about a way to cope with his emotional struggles given
his circumstance. He previously found himself in a contemplating state about suicide because his
emotional response overtook his concern about his fathers death and mother’s marriage.Hamlet feels deep
pain and sorrow due to his fathers absence and cannot accept the fact that “Gertrude” married his uncle,
“Claudius.” However, this line emphasizes that Hamlet feels more certain about losing his life because he
would no longer have to watch the inceptuous actions done by Claudius and Gertrude. This section of the
play lets us know how he can no longer endure and wants to take matters into his own hands. The phrase
“Outrageous fortune” dictates atrocity or violence while created in a rhetorical form where it is implied
that weapons can target someone from a distance in an intentional and unintentional manner. It lets us
know how someone may not respond effectively after enduring the attacks in order to make readers
understand how “fortune” represents the good or bad that comes upon an individual. The phrases “Take
arms against a sea of troubles” are metaphorically used to compare Hamlet’s troubles to a seemingly
endless sea. This endless suffering that Hamlet perceives life as, lets us know that he is left with two
options. He may choose to lose his life because he can no longer endure.Or he may choose to affect the
life of his uncle in the form of revenge.Additionally, line 72 states “Th’ oppressor’s wrong, the proud
man’s contumely,The pangs of disprized love, the law’s delay.”This line determines that Hamlet disregards
the oppressions that people encounter in their life and instead wonders what stops them from actually
commiting suicide. He believes that life is synonymous for his own suffering. In this line,he recognizes the
trials and tribulations that one has to bear with overtime. The phrase “Proud man’s contumely” refers to
the oppressions of the powerful and humiliating insults or contemptuous behavior from arrogant
men.Other phrases such as “disprized love” ,or “law’s delay” represents unrequited love and the slowness
of justice. This makes readers reflect on the burdens we carry and how it wouldn’t be that way if we were
not frightened by death itself. So Hamlet wonders whether he should live and suffer throughout his
hardships or die to end the suffering or numb his pain.He is only worried about the uncertainty of what
death may bring him.In spite of the oppressions that people may encounter,Hamlet is aware of the the
terrors that may await him once he dies.Consequently,he questions if living is worth enduring numerous
pain.According to line 80,it was said that the “Dread of something after death,The undiscovered country
from whose bourn.. No traveler returns, puzzles the will.”This line represents that Hamlet remains fearful
of the unknown. He contemplates his actions because of the consequences that they may bring as he
distinguishes life from death knowing about the smaller and greater extremes of his actions. Not only does
Hamlet’s indecisive nature reveal his hardship of choosing life or death. It also acknowledges how Hamlet
would most likely measure possible consequences before being certain about murdering Claudius.Even if
Hamlet has a desire to avenge his father’s death as a resolution to the wrong that was committed,he is lead
by a path of uncertainty. This line suggests that we prefer the troubles that we know of over exploring
undiscovered territory. The phrase “Undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns” proves
that we would rather stay in a state of fear because we don’t know what awaits for those who die. Also, the
words “Puzzles the will” denotes that our willingness is “puzzled” because we can no longer act without
knowing what might happen.Ultimately, the line contributes to the way Hamlet allowed fear and
uncertainty to overtake him and his next course of action regarding life or death.

Throughout the text,it is noticeable that Hamlet develops opposing feelings about death itself. In
essence, the author of Hamlet makes readers understand that we should replace fear with endurance in
order to not be overtaken by our own weaknesses.
