1 Scope :
This section covers training, certification, and vision requirements for individuals
performing the inspection procedures in this standard.

2 Introduction:

Inspection personnel performing inspections according to this standard shall be certified by


their employer. The company shall have a written program outlining the certification
program. The requirements for the program are given in paragraphs through 3.28.3
through 3.28.5.

3 Training Program :

Inspection personnel shall receive training in the inspections they will perform. The training
shall include instruction in the method principles, equipment operation and calibration, and
procedural steps. Time spent in the day-to-day performance of the inspection methods
may not be counted toward training requirements.

a. Inspection Method Examinations: Inspection personnel shall take written and practical
(operating) examinations covering the following requirements for the applicable methods:

• Written Examination: Method principles, equipment calibration and operation, and


procedural steps.

• Practical Examination: Equipment setup, calibration and operation, procedural


steps, mate rial disposition, and job reposing.

b. Vision Requirements: Inspection personnel shall meet the following requirements for visual acuity
and color contrast.

• Near Vision Acuity: Inspection personnel shall demonstrate the ability to read a
minimum of Jaeger Number 2 or equivalent type and size letter at twelve inches
or greater distance on a standard Jaeger test chart. This test shall be given
annually.

• Color Contrast: Inspection personnel shall demonstrate the ability to distinguish and
differentiate contrast among colors used in the inspection methods lo be
performed. This test shall be given at each certification interval.

4 Records :

The inspection company shall maintain the following records for all inspectors.

c. Certification Document: This document or a copy shall be at the work location. The document shall
state the inspector's name, type of training received, number of training hours, certification date,
and employment date.

d. Examination Records: The inspector’s examinations, grades, and vision examination records
shall be maintained for the duration of employment with the company.

5 Certification :

e. Responsibility: Certification of inspectors is the responsibility of the inspection company


that employs them, although outside agencies may be contracted to provide training and
program administration.

Certification are :

• Completion of the training and examination requirements of this section and of the
inspection company’s written program.

• Acceptable performance on the eye examinations.

g. Recertification: An inspector shall be recertified:

• Whenever the inspector has not performed the applicable method for a period of one
year.

• When the inspector changes employers.

• At three year intervals with the same employer

6 Vendor Registration.

Chapter 4 of this standard gives optional requirements for registration of inspection and
threading vendors.
