Prison background- The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.

Admission process:
Receiving- new prisoner usually comes from provincial jail where he committed upon conviction by
the court and escorted by the escort platoon during his transfer to the national prison.
Checking of commitment process- receiving officer checks the commitment papers if they are in
order. That is if they contain the signature of the judge/clerk of court, and the seal of the court.
Identification- identity established through the picture and fingerprint appearing in the commitment
order. This is to ensure that the person being committed is the same as the person being named in the
commitment order.
Searching- frisking of the prisoner and searching his personal things. Weapons, contrabands are
confiscated and deposited to the property custodian.
Briefing and orientation- the prisoner will be brief and oriented on the rules and regulation of the
prison before he will be assigned to the RDC/ quarantine unit.
ORIENTATION PROCEDURES: (orientation takes place with in the first few days in the center
which consists in:
a.) GIVING THE PRISONER A BOOKLET OF RULES TO THE REGULATION AND
EXPLAINING THE RULES TO THEM.
b.) CONDUCTING GROUP MEETING OF THE CENTER TO EXPLAIN THE AVAILABLE
TREATMENT PROGRAMS.
c.) HOLDING SESSIONS WITH THE MEMBER OF THE CENTER’S STAFF TO
EXPLAIN WHAT THE INMATES SHOULD DO TO PROFIT MOST FROM THEIR
EXPERIENCES.
EFFECTS ON INMATE
ORIENTATION OF PRISON LIFE- New inmates would have to adjust to the new routines,
regulations and culture of the prison. They may experience a culture shock, which lead to stress
and anxiety.
LOSS OF PERSONAL FREEDOM- upon admission, an inmate loses personal freedom. This
loss can significantly impact a person’s mental and emotional state.
SAFETY CONCERNS- new inmates might fear for their safety due to potential evidence or
conflicts within the prison population.
LIVING CONDITIONS- the condition within jails can vary widely but often they are crowded
and may lack certain facilities which can impact an inmates physical health and well-being.
EFFECT ON RELATIONSHIPS- being incarcerated can strain personal relationships with
family and friends, as communication and visits may become limited.
REHABILITATION AND REFORM- on a positive note, admission to a prison like those
managed by the bjmp can also provide opportunities for rehabilitation and personal
development through various programs offered within the penal system.
LEGAL IMPLICATIONS- admission to a jail indicates the beginning of serving a sentence
after a conviction, which has long-term legal implications for the inmate.
