Leadership Effectiveness

My brother, Mikhael Cook, is a person that I can consider to have good leadership skills.
He has very good emotional intelligence. Such an example would be when he runs his call
centers in the Philippines. So If someone doesn’t show up to work because they’re sick, Mikhael
will call up the sick employee to let them know to feel better, pay them for the amount of hours
that they were away (usually 1-2 days max), and have one of the other co-workers substitute the
work for some overtime pay. Mikhael is a keen listener, so whenever one of his employees tells
him something, he will wait until they finish speaking, and then take a minute to process the
information and then react accordingly. Also whenever one of his employees is sad or is going
through a tough situation, he will try to cheer them up and make them feel better. Mikhael is also
very good at expressing himself and communicating with his subordinates and peers so when he
needs something to get done, he will do it right away and be clear about his motivates. Mikhael is
definitely a Theory Y manager because he is more optimistic of his employees, he wants the best
out of them, and continuously strives to work alongside them as constituents rather than
employees. He believes that everyone should have the ability to give their input and perform the
work that they’re the best at, so every so often he will have a survey available where employees
can give their feedback and then he along with his team of managers will try to find constructive
ways to implement them whether that be through team activities, creating an agenda, incentive
programs, or relax rooms where employees can take some time to relax and destress.
Those who believe in Theory Y are the ones who try to create an atmosphere where
creativity, freedom of expression, and individual thoughts are constantly motivated and inspired
for the betterment of the group and their productivity. My brother, on the other hand, tries to steer
away from Theory X because it makes working a lot less fulfilling, productivity is stifled and it
makes getting work done much more difficult. In essence, a Theory X manager is the exact
opposite of what a manager should be. In this scenario, a manager would need to reign supreme
over their employees and direct them towards getting a task done. They are constantly controlling
and demanding that their employees do as they say. They believe that employees are inherently

lazy, lack motivation to get the work done and are only productive when being forced to.
My brother is successful because he is effective at communicating with his employees. If
you want to create any real meaningful change or get any work done, then you need to be able to
effectively communicate what your goals and objectives are with your team, so that they
understand what you’re trying to accomplish and be able to maximize productivity. Being able to
increase participation and engagement among employees is important to creating an effective
team and my brother has done this very successfully through team activities and brainstorming
sessions. Managers who can avoid social loafing among group members by limiting group size,
have challenging goals, and create identifiable benchmarks will increase involvement and
cooperation among team members. My brother will almost always prepare in advance for an
upcoming meeting and to promote engagement among other participants will assign them
specific tasks and have them write down 4-5 ideas that they want discussed at the meeting to
which the top 10 will be voted on.
Mikhael overwhelmingly has a positive influence on the people he works with because he
actively tries to get others involved in constructive ways, has a calming demeanor, and promotes
engagement through different team activities. Sometimes even something as simple as bringing
in candy for all the employees has boosted productivity and cooperation. Actions like these have
led to more successful meetings and has encouraged many within his group to speak out, and not
just sit idly back. Giving everyone the ability to contribute to a discussion by asking for their
input, and being understanding of their views has led to more fruitful discussions and better
outcomes. While reading about the different types of theories and leadership qualities that one
should have in order to be a successful manager/leader, emotional intelligence and servant
leadership qualities stand up above everything else. Mikhael has been an effective leader because
of his commitment to act for the greater good of his community and for others over his own self
interests. He has always stayed true to his moral values, sacrificing his own wants and needs for
the betterment of his customers, employees, and his environment. He always tries to promote an
uplifting environment, and encourages his employees to be creative and to work hard and to help
others when they can. Most importantly, Mikhael is always mindful of his actions and always
tries to incorporate ethical decision making and human rights before anything else.
