CHAPTER I

The Problem and Background

Rationale of the study

The advancement of technologies

With the advancements of technologies, teaching strategies are changing every day;

consequently, the greatest struggle of teachers is how to attract the attention of their students,

when they are learning: Students do have short attention span and they are not fond of listening

lectures. Moreover, inspiring students to learn sets them on a path of becoming their best selves.

Teachers are looking forward for something to open more ways for them to learn, so they

develop the skills they need to succeed and tap into their unique potentials. Learning should not

be limited of typical class discussion. Utilizing smart television promotes better academic

learning among students. They gain the opportunity to learn, to analyze and to create with

teachers.

Depending on how one looks at the status of educational televisions in the world today, one sees

either glass half full or a glass half empty. Great advances have been spread worldwide in

forging inventive applications. Subsequently, a smart television is designed being able to work as

a teaching aid and having this following features low production cost since it can be

manufactured by placing the 35 USD COMPUTER in the interior of the television sets which are

already in use in the classrooms all over the world. It is also lined up with the most recent
information and telecommunication trends in education. Lastly, it would propose to use

applications as subject of study. On the other hand, we have been known a great deal to the role

television often plays in agendas’ setting, in elevating issues in the agenda of nations, ministering

and professional groups. However, model uses television for national development have emerged

in widely separation of fame and places but never had determined human effort been made in a

single locale to realize anything, approaching the full scope and impact of television in it is

capacity to teach, illuminate and empower stated by Ed Palmer.

Moreover, the integration of technology in the delivery of education is considered vital in the

implementation of students’ centered approach of teaching method. But due to inadequate

financial resources of third world countries in Asia the government could hardly provide it.

These were the greatest challenges of ASEAN states that are in the lower stages of technology

development. RangubTook(2016) states that many Thai graduates lack essential working skills.

Many of them do have enough skills to respond to the country’s needs. This might be the

consequence of educational system, curricular administrator, stakeholder involvement and

teachers. The educational system involves low levels of development on technology

competitiveness and has low collaboration between the education institutes, business and

industry. World Economic Forum report (2014) also emphasized that Thailand had education

system with only ordinary quality at all levels and low level of technological readiness.

Consequently, the education system needs to be reformed using an open educational system

approach among students and smart television could be one. However, ASEAN ICT plan masters

(2015) presents that Singapore, is a perfect leader in all aspects among ASEAN countries who

made their best. Singapore taps the table when it comes to competitiveness and Malaysia got a
high placed developing rest of the countries like Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar and other Asian

countries has still long way to go.

Mirror with this issue, Philippines still belongs to the third world developing countries in Asia. It

is then evident that Philippines is not excluded in this issue same as what other countries are

facing. The archipelago of Philippines is still under the battle of such called low competent

technological readiness of education. Speaking about the educational system of Filipinos, this

would be a big and serious topic in the country. Government gives a little attention about

education resulting to some educational problems that hinders teachers to support a better

learning to students because of the lack of facilities and equipment f as medium of learning.

Filipino students act likely as to other students outside the country who were born into digital

nature in every sense that they ate in the age of touch screens, tablets and any technologies they

have right now. Recently, one of the greatest challenges of the educators is how to encourage the

students to participate well in the class discussion knowing that students have short attention

span. Particularly speaking, hours of sitting around for the whole day long listening on lectures

and a monotonous discussion with no such excitement makes them bored and tired. This was the

reasons why educators use smart tv as a teaching tools to attract students’ attention. Many of the

schools in Philippines implemented such tool for they have realized that if television content in

the house in able to get the attention of young ones and they keep interested to bring televisions

in the discussion inside the classroom.

The country of Philippines, branches into different localities. To make it more legible and further

simplify, the Sisters of Mary School Girls town, Inc. is never been excused on this issue. The

school is a private-sectarian school and having high standardized competencies to attain.

Students get to be bombarded of the series of school schedules from morning until afternoon.
Whole day sitting with the visual aids of teachers with full of writings makes them compacted

and tend not to understand the discussions. Teachers are also trying their best how to make the

class lively seems to be lacking still, needing something to fill this gap. Later on, realizing that

21st century children are visual learners. Hence, the teachers are looking forward for an effective

disseminator of knowledge, shaper of attention and will serve as motivational recommended

action to have better understanding on the discussion among the students. They don’t only

develop classroom skills but also work-based skills, out of those basic skills as to prepare

themselves on their work immersion.

Indeed, across the globe, in Asia, in Philippines and even in the Sisters of Mary School Girls

town, Inc. goes with these lines: successful learners are considered as active learners. Active

learners are aware that they are learning that means recognizing one’s strength and weaknesses

in having the ability to monitor one understands of the content. It also means constantly making

adjustment to support comprehension during the learning process. Learning through watching

maybe a key ingredient in a students’ development (Bandura, 1994) as cited by Deborah (2006).

The only way to get out in this big issue on education is integrating the modern day teaching tool

to develop students’ comprehension on classroom skills as basis of work-based skills. This is

when the educational technology, the Smart TV, shows perfect illustration of teacher and

students having fruitful discussions and sharing of knowledge and values through the use of

appropriate modern-day instructional material. The Sisters of Mary School had implemented this

teaching tool however; students just enhance the classroom skills and disregard the benefits of

such skills in the work field. As the school main goal is to bring forward adept individuals

prepared for the work field so, students need to precocious basic skills inside the school

especially in the classroom. This is the reason why the researchers wanted to pursue this study to
describe the utilization of Smart TV as an integral learning tool bridging classroom and worked-

based skills among the senior high school, grade eleven(11) students in the Sisters of Mary

School Girls town, Inc.

The researchers’ ultimate goal for this study is to help the students specifically the senior high

school ones on how to be better prepared professional through this modern-day medium of

teaching. The utilization of Smart TV as a powerful educational medium in the 21st century

learners in the Sisters of Mary School Girls town, Inc. Since, technology offers tremendous

potentials for improving the delivery of education so; we should not squander this opportunity

(Trotter, 2001). This study also aims to enhance student’s interaction, verbalization and

involvement on collaborative learning through Smart TV. It is also to describe the learning

process and classroom engagement of students in the utilization of Smart TV. This study

therefore becomes incumbent upon the teacher to now acquire a keenly awareness and clear

concept of this new concept of educational technology. Considering that educational smart tv

proposes bright prospects for quality learning. The teachers must be the way of realization by

which Smart TV can help enhance quality of learning, speed up learning time, increase teaching

efficiency, and reduce educational costs. Educators, they become more keenly aware of their

responsibility to deliver the best quality education to students. They have began to recognize the

need to be aware of educational technology-as for the benefit of this study. Therefore, this study

will serve as recommendation for school development as to how should students precocious their

skills and become adept individuals prepare for the world of work
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to describe the utilization of Smart TV as an integral learning tool

bridging classroom and work-based skills among grade 11 students in the Sisters of Mary School

Girls town, In

This study sought to answer these queries:

1. How is SmartTV being utilized as perceived by the respondents?

6. There are benefits acquired by the respondents through the use of Smart TV in the class

discussion.

7. Based on the results and findings of the study of Smart TV; smart students enhancement plan

can be proposed as a recommendation on the school.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to describe the influence of utilizing Smart TV as an effective

teaching tool bridging classroom and work-based skills in the Sisters of Mary School

Girls town, Inc. This school is specifically located at J.P Rizal St., Talisay City, Cebu, a

private sectarian school. This is founded through the inspiration of our Lady of Banneux

by the dearest founder of the school, Venerable Aloysius John Philip Schwartz, an

American priest. This was founded for the poorest of the poor youth of the country,

Philippines to offer a free and high quality standard education. The school has three 7

storey buildings which has 30 classroom namely, St. Mary (building 1), St. Catherine

(building 3), and St. Therese (building 2). Saint Mary’s building has 10 viewing room

and a total of 14 Smart TVs in the whole building. St. Catherine’s building which has 6

viewing room and a total of 16 smart TVs in the whole building. St. Therese building
which has 10 viewing room and a total of 11 smart TVs in the whole building. Thus,

there are 26 numbers of viewing rooms intended for class discussion if the teacher

chooses to use Smart TV and a total of 41 smart TVs for the whole 3 buildings.

The study is a qualitative research using phenomenological design since

this best suit to the topic focusing on the lived experiences of the respondent’s one’s

perception in the influence of Smart TV on students learning. The researchers select from

the senior high school, Grade 11 whose population was 517 out of that 15 were chosen to

be the respondents of the said study. This study further discussed the linking of classroom

and work-based skills as to prepare the senior high schools selected respondents on their

work immersion.

Significance of the Study

The researchers believed that this study would be beneficial to the following:

Teachers

To help teachers on how to deliver an interactive and quality learning among the students.

This would serve as their encouragement to fully adapt the new teaching tool to inspire students

to participate in the class discussion through smart tv as it visually present the topic.

School Administrator

To reinforce the new conventional learning method as it provides on how to effectively

deliver the curriculum mandated, to ensure better learning and understanding for the students.

This study would help the school administrator to identify what one has to do into higher
competitiveness of the educational system in some ways like placing individual Smart TV per

classroom for easy delivery or topic.

Junior High Students

This would help them to developed more skills in the utilization of Smart TV in the classroom

for one’s own benefit on the next level.

Senior High Students

To let them realize how important to precocious the skills acquired in the classroom through

Smart TV and connect in the work-based skills they should possess as a preparation for their

work immersion.

Donors and Benefactors

To thank them for the money being donated for the project of Smart TV in the school, seeing

the progress of students’ learning process through the use of this technology as to pay back their

effort for the students’ education sake.

Future Researchers

If would benefit them to strengthen or support their study especially when it is relevant to

this study. This would sense as these basis or model leading them on ways how to conduct

research paper.

Definition of Terms
The field of technology shows different jargons that researchers used in this study. Enable to

present a clearer understanding about this study, the researchers define conceptually and

operationally the following words.

Utilization

Utilization means the ability that refers to the act of using something of that is practically use.

This is also the state of having been made use of.

In this study utilization refers to the using of Smart TV in the Sisters of Mary School as a new

learning tool. Also refers or how Smart TV usage developed classroom skills and work-based

skills.

Skills

Skills means the ability to do something well or called to be on expert. This also specifies a

particular ability of one’s person.

In this study this refers on what classroom skills and work-based skills being developed by

the Grade 11 students. Also refers on acquired skills using Smart TV.

Smart TV

Smart TV is a TV that provides interactive features similar to those involved in internet or

web services. Is a digital television that is essentially, an internet connected?

In this study Smart TV refers to a new learning tool injected by the school in replaced to

the conventional tools used before.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter includes the related literatures written by experts currently. This were presented as

to fully support as it shows direct relevance to the literatures about the integration of smart tv in

the classroom bridging classroom skills and work-based skills.

Related Literature

In the book of Emergency Technology of Siemen and Tittenberg (2009) mention that, to

measure the effectiveness of technology use in teaching and learning process one has to answer

question like “know do we measure its effect?” Is it time spent in a classroom? Is it a functioned

of test scores? Is it about learning or understanding? Over the past 20 years, technology has lead

to a growing census among educators and the general public that it should play more integral role
in students’ education reported by CEO Forum On Education and technology ,2009 (Fouts and

Johnson, 2000). In the article entitled Television as a Medium for Education, television has been

given considerable importance in many countries as source and a tool of teaching. TV is a

adaptable and can follow different approaches when used in various educational situation

(RitibaB.Gohil,2016) she also added that to support formal education, television usually function

as supporter and as reinforcement tool: This instructional tool is an idea, practice or object which

is consider new by the people (Roger,2006) or a solution which is applicable in economic

benefits, knowledge or other practices applicable in working life (Kairisto-Mertanen, Pentilla

and Auotio, 2011). Moreover, educational technology is not restricted only about computer used

of individual but also other equipment and applications such as video conferencing, digital

television (allowing students interact with its programs at their own pace), electronic

whiteboards and digital cameras(Jackson, 2008). Hilary Mason (2017) on his interview said that

he believes technology gives us superpowers. Since everyone has the opportunity to learn, think,

analyze and create with teachers. It is for the fact that teachers care deeply about the social and

moral education of the students in the classroom, but educations system has come yet establish

content and explicit approaches that will allow us to build the societies we want to see. (Caroline

Smistk, 2018)

Furthermore, advocates also claim that teachers benefits from the introduction of

technology into the classroom. Technology gives teachers the ability to instructional materials

for students to draw up on the classroom (Dunleavy, et al., 2007; Waddups, 2004; Healey 2001).

Strengthening this statement, RitibaGohil (2016) added that Smart TVs offers other feature like

USB Display, of presentations and videos without the aid of laptops or computer instead even

just portable is enough to work on this technology. Furthermore, since smart tv is both for
education and entertainment Attewell (2001) termed this as edutainment. He found out that

through the use of text, graphics, audio, video and animations, edutainment steers away from the

traditional teaching method. This technology helps to reinforce learning more fun rather than a

hassle. Another advantage of edutainment is that it allows the students to control their own

learning pace. The districts and schools implemented such tool for many reasons but what is the

main purpose is that to increase student’s competitiveness in economic, enhancing ones skills

through the use of Smart TV (Bonifaz and Zucker, 2004). It is for the fact that technology raises

different contributions supporting the effectiveness of its usage in education that includes the

delivery of instruction can be more standardized, instruction can be more interesting, learning

becomes more interactive, the quality of learning can be enhance, according to the book of

“Educational Technology”. However, Smart TV doesn’t just talk about enhancement of

classroom skills but also work-based skills as stated by Caroline SmiskGether (2018). He said

that there are few basic things in acquiring job skills such as deciding with fair solving problems,

knowing how to apply new skills, requiring strength and weaknesses. We can do much better job

by thinking purposely about the kind of social learning that we want students to the engage in

using technology in the classroom comes with host of benefits on education(Joni Nguyen, 2017).

Related Study

In the study of Walls, (2013) entitled, “SmartTV for Effectiveness Academic Learning”

states that, smart television is one of the tools that is used in modern day classroom. He also

added that Smart TV is an emerging tool trend in technology and education like any other
television; this device is capable of playing videos, audio recordings and images. Smart TV are

perfect for teaching group of students making the interaction between students high that leads to

better socialization. Teachers can give more group activities using this device and students can

group together to participate. For it is teamwork and socialization that teachers should teach to

students and this can only thought by integrating new strategies in the conventional methods of

teaching(word press). Teachers encourage students to participate in the class discussion and with

smart TV, this become easy task (Walls, D., 2003). In the study of WGU(World Governments

University)(2018) entitled, “Teaching Strategies for using Educational Movies on the

Classroom”, that states, this is when teachers with educational television programs during class

the relationship between them and their students changes usually the status since teachers impart

knowledge while students absorb the information. Hedayat(2017) in his study entitled,”

Introducing Smart TVs in classrooms an Innovative Learning Methodology”, states that those

conventional chalk and clusters have made the students static and bored, but now; through these

smart TV, the students can visualize the lesson through images and videos. Television viewing is

known to affect children’s verbal abilities and other physical, cognitive and emotional

development in psychological studies of Takeuchi(2013) entitled, “The impact of Television

Viewing on Brain Structure: Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Analysis.” In the same study of

Hedayat (2017) that states, it is then to prove from the study that outdoor videos or photos can be

effectively displayed in the classroom and shared with students. If a student and a teacher

explore a good educational video that can explain the discussion more profoundly, then, it can be

made through this smart TVs for the whole class and sometimes for the whole school to see.

Moreover, many cross sectional and longitudinal studies have reported deleterious effects of TV

viewing on the cognitive abilities, attitudes, behavior and academic performance (Johnson et al
2002, 2007; Christakis et al, 2004). Another longitudinal studies showed that is viewing affects

attitudes (Lanhuis et al, 2007) which turns in correlated with wide range of cognitive

performances (Sergant et al, 2002). Finally, longitudinal studies have shown that TV viewing has

detrimental effects on verbal abilities including verbal working memory (Zimmerman and

Christakis, 2005). However, smart TV doesn’t just limit there, for it also provides students with

many different modalities to process information, students are better like to retain and recall

information through smart TV (Raj M., 2012) on his study entitled, “Effectiveness of Electronic

Classroom for Teaching General Science and Secondary Level”. Previously the teachers has to

stand still with the projector to explain the content but now Smart TV allow teachers to roam

around and deliver their lesson in the whole class(Hedayat, F. 2017) on his study entitled,

”Introducing Smart TVs in Classroom an Innovative Learning Method”. For this, the instruction

can then ask one students to share their insights with the rest of the class strengthening the

absorption of knowledge.(WGU, 2018)on his study entitled, “Teaching Strategy for using

Educational Movies on the Classroom”. A study was conducted by Lal, (2003) on Quality

Educational Program for children and found out that if media is for education purposes it

enriches learning experiences. They also suggested that production on a quality educational

media programmer relevant to the subject and to different stages of education facilitate enriched

learning experience.(Lal, H.,2003) Learning from smart TV is really fun, Hedayat (2017) on his

study entitled,” Introducing Smart TVs in Classroom can Innovative Learning Method.”
Chapter III

Research Methodology

In this chapter, the researchers show the processes on how the researchers conduct the

research and the procedures on how the researchers gather the necessary data. Also, this chapter

presents the criteria on how were the respondents were chosen and where the research is being

conducted. Furthermore, in this chapter the research design being used is described and how it

fits to the particular study.

Research Design

This study uses a qualitative design particularly, a phenomenology. This

phenomenology design focuses on what people experience or known as describing lived

experience to some phenomenon, or interpret those experiences. Phenomenology makes an effort

to understand people’s perception, perspectives and understandings in a particular phenomenon.

In addition, this includes better understanding of meanings and evolvement of new theories.
However, this design required more time and other sources for data collection. Orbick (2007)

states that phenomenology is an appropriate approach when a researcher tries to understand the

underlying meaning and also the essence of an experience from participants point of view. In

connection with this, the researcher uses this design because the researchers want to study the

experiences of grade 11 students when it comes in utilization of smart tv as a new learning tool,

also on how the smart tv nourished their classroom skills and what work-based being developed.

As follows, this design is also applicable for the respondents which are grade 11 students, which

the researchers believe has more experiences of having smart tv as a new learning tool.

Respondents of the Study

The researchers had chosen the Senior high school students, specifically the

grade 11 students as the respondents of the study since they met the criteria of the study which is

to identify students which has partly high experience in utilization of technology. They were the

respondents for the level of their education gets higher from junior to senior high, perhaps it is

evident in their stage the importance of technology on their learning most especially the

acquisition of knowledge. Moreover, the grade 11 are the selected respondents for in this school

as in their level individuals would already undergo work-immersion and they should have

potentials to face this field and this study would beneficially help them. The overall population

of the respondents nis 517 wherein 15 were chosen to participate in the conduction of the study

about the utilization of smart tv as integral learning tool bridging classroom skills to work-based

skills. The respondents are purposively selected to answer the queers defined in the study.

Research Instrument
This study used a descriptive instrument, particularly, a semi-structured interview

guide questionnaire where it could have some follow-up questions. This serve as guide of the

researchers in conducting the interview. The questions are specified to the focus of the study that

is the classroom skills to work-based skills in the utilization of Smart tv.

Research Environment

The study is conducted inside the Sisters of Mary School-Girlstown Inc., this is a

sectarian school which is 5 hectares lot along the J.P. Rizal Street Talisay City, Cebu,

Philippines. This school was founded by an american priest named Venerable Aloysius Philip

Schwartz which recruits the poorest of the poor children over the past years to educate them

mentally and spiritually. This school is also committed for the youth’s future which school

provide scholarly education following K-12 program. In addition, this offers the children to learn

Technical Vocational Track namely: Technical Drafting, Electronic Products Assembling and

Servicing,Dressmaking, Mechatronics, Bread and Pastry Production, and Computer Servicing

System because of these, students are well trained. This training of the students ate all free

known as non-profit school. Moreover, this school have two workshops, one senior high building

and three 7 storey building corresponding to dormitories and classrooms which serves as a

comfortable place for their training and learning. Subsequently, this environment is suitable for

the study since the school has adapted the new conventional method which is the utilization of

Smart Tv into the classroom. The school has developed it’s higher quality of education as it

adapts the new teaching tool from those projector, chalk, blackboards and visual aids that is the
most commonly used before. The school have basketball courts, volleyball courts, paths for the

runners and a swimming pool. As of this time, the scholl generates first 2 batches who graduated

in the senior high school. The school is continuously serving the students who came from less

privileged families, also continue pursuing the mission and vision of the school.

Figure 2: Research Environment

Sampling Procedure

To acquire respondents for this research, the researchers utilized purposive non-

random sampling and purposive sampling. Purposive sampling is a technique used to select
purposively the respondents of the research. Polit et al (2001), define a sample as a proportion of

a population. In this research, the researchers purposively chose the respondents from the set of

criteria and that is respondents should be grade eleven students whose population is 517 and only

15 were chosen from the Sisters of Mary School-Girlstown, Talisay.

These are the following criteria in choosing the respondents:

1. A grade eleven students of the Sisters of Mary School- Girlstown Inc.

2. Had been experiencing the utilization of Smart Tv during the class discussion

Research Procedure

Data Gathering Procedure

This phenomenology study gathered the necessary data through a semi-structured

interview which is using a guide questionnaire that allows researchers obtain the data gathering

through these following steps: the researchers made an approval letter for the following people:

for the school principal, for the mother-sister of the respondents and for the respondents that

contain a permission to allow the researchers to conduct the interview. It is then followed by

identifying the chosen respondents of senior high school , Grade eleven students. After the

collection of data, the researchers are consolidated and presented in a tabular form through

colaizzi approach. This includes the transcript of the data where the researchers formulated a

meaning based on the respondents answers and were also categorize based on themes using the

colaizzi approach.
Qualitative Data Analysis

The researchers analyze and gathered data from the chosen respondents through the use

of thematic content analysis. The researchers then used the colaizzi method approach, where the

date being gathered are group into themes and formulate a meaning based on the information

being obtain through the interview. Lastly, the answers are consolidated which directed the

researchers in making the conclusions and the recommendation

Figure 3: Flow of Data Analysis Utilizing Colaizzi Approach

Ethical Consideration

This study observed ethical principles that adhered to in order to successfully conduct

this research. The researchers obtain permission on the circles of people that would be included

in this study. Moreover, the researchers also observe confidentiality among the chosen

respondents on whatever information they have gathered. On the process of interview researches

observe skill needed when looking and organizing an interview for data collection. The

researchers ensure the safety of the respondents and their full confidence to express their

experiences as the researchers show their respect during the interview. In, addition, the

researchers also follow objectivity upon conducting the data to provide and accurate information

based on the queries formulated.
