My name is Chris Laxton | am a level 3 Aboriginal Community Educational Officer that has had the privilege of working alongside Jason Drewett at Renmark North Primary School for the past 2 years. | have truly enjoyed these 2 years of working with Jason to deliver an authentic and genuine Aboriginal Perspectives lesson to each class at the school ‘When [first took on the role at Renmark Primary Schoo! | was nervous about being able to give @ true Aboriginal Perspective in these lessons, as in the past | had the experience were the lesson would be taken off track and comments like “yes Aboriginal people wore sheep skins” or “Aboriginal people roamed around Australia” would be made, straight away painting an untrue picture of Aboriginal history. | have never felt or heard any comments like this from Jason, and | believe this is due to Jason's genuine respect for not only the Aboriginal Culture as a whole but also a show of respect for our Aboriginal students, families, staff and the broader school community. | believe that in the 2 years Jason and myself have been working together to deliver the Aboriginal Perspectives classes that stereotypes have been broken and an appreciation for a beautiful Culture and languages has been instilled in the students. | believe that itis through a sincere and genuine work approach like this, that the gap between Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal people will close and a genuine appreciation and respect for each other will begin. Jason has always been genuine when delivering our Aboriginal Perspectives classes, only using, ‘authentic sights to obtain information (NAIDOC site for NAIDOC information or Reconciliation ‘Australia for Reconciliation Week information) and then checking that information with myself. This shows a want to deliver authentic and accurate information. In my over 10 years of working with the Education Department | have always promoted and pushed that a teacher's best resource for an authentic Aboriginal perspective will be sitting straight in front of them, normally sporting a big proud smile. Jason has always done this naturally and I can honestly say that in my 10 years and working with many staff over the 10 years | have met very few staff that have the natural ability to incorporate the voices and views of our Aboriginal students. This is an ‘amazing quality to have especially in a teacher so early in his teaching career, | feel that this connection will only grow with Jason as his career evolves. ove that Jason encourages ever child to have a go and do the best they can. He sees value in each student and is great at promoting a student's strengths. | wish Jason all the best in his future (and would love the opportunity to work with him again) and know that whatever and where ever his life takes him, any of our mobs’ kids that have the privilege of being in his class will always be heard and valued, and as a result of this feel a connection to th: learning and schooling environment.
