FONT ROJA
route map
The name of the route is ``El menejador´´ and is
classified as a yellow route in order to be followed
in an easy way (we have three different types of
routes that can be hiked within Font Roja’s area)
The reason why I have chosen this route is not only due to personal
matters but also because, In my humble opinion, this route can be
adequate for children who are starting to see the world with other
eyes and another way of thinking (logical and interested in his
surroundings). On the one hand, this route has lots of diversity and
nature that should be breathtaking for students and, as a matter of
fact, for them it will be a completely different world since they are
used to cities. On the other hand, we could observe the beauty of this
landscape safely and in a didactical way, we could teach them how to
take care of nature, as well as encourage them to embrace nature
positively; and the fact that this route is easy and secure for
children helps a lot, hence, is a very good option for wandering safe and
without any worries.
Travel distance
Visitors center
Firstly, we will kick off this route
in the Font roja’s visitors
center, next to the Hermitage of
the Virgen de los Lirios. (point of
departure)
Cova gelada
Following the yellow indicators we will
arrive at the Glorieta dels Paellers,
where we can find the oldest oaks of the
park. If we walk 20 m, we discover on the
left the Cova Gelada characterized by
its freshness (7ºC)
Pla de la mina
Walking 250 m, we will reach Pla de la
mina, where we can see a lime kiln
reproduction, two watchers and a coal
bunker. After walking for 1,1 km, we can
find the Pla dels Galers, where we could
find some footprints on the mud
coal bunker
Mirador de Pilatos
900m further forward, we will get to Mirador
de Pilatos (Pilato’s watcher) and thanks to it,
we can observe with details the Serra de
Mariola, as well as the Polop river’s
landscape. Looking at the mountain range, we
will see some deciduous trees that are part
of the mixed forest.
Mas de Tetuan
Later, we can arrive at Mas
de Tetuan, an example of
agriculture exploitation built
at the end of the XIX century
Cava coloma
When we advance 800 m, we
arrive to Cava Coloma, with a
capacity of 2.200m3 and is one of
the oldest constructions used for
keep and store of the compact ice
South slope
At this point, we pass to the south slope,
dominated by the low vegetation of the
solana and from where we can see
emblematic mountains such as Aitana or Puig
Campana, both accompanied by the
mediterranean sea. We could also see three
cavas: Noguera, Simarro y Canyo, as well as
some reptiles.
El Menejador
With 500 m remaining in order to reach the
top, we will follow a paved way to finally come
to El Menejador at 1356 m of the floor, one of
the highest spots in Alicante and we can see
the Serra de Mariola and the Montcabrer,
Aitana, Cabeçó d'Or, Maigmó, and Penya Roja.
