2. Modal Verbs
Modals are used to express an ability, make a request, or refer to a possibility.

Ability: Mike can speak German well.


Request: Can I have a cupcake? May I have a coffee?
Possibility: You can have meat or fish.
It’s cloudy. It might rain today.

3. Modals can also be used to express an obligation and to give advice.

Obligation: You should call your mother; it’s her birthday.


You must drive on the left in Ireland.
You can’t smoke in here!
Advice: It’s cold today; you should wear a coat.
