SUBJECT: Mathematics ACTIVITY: Counting AGE GROUP: 3-5 yrs.

Cookies! old
OBJECTIVE: The children will be able to learn how to count objects to six and identify
missing numbers after finishing this assignment called “Counting Cookies!”

MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Small stuffed dog
- Small stuffed cat
- Counting Cookies worksheet, 1 per student
- Copies of Cookie Images worksheet, 1 for every 2-3 students

PROCESS AND TEACHING STRATEGIES:

Create a circle of the students and introduce stuffed cats and dogs as best friends. Show them
frolicking and having fun, collecting six cookie photos. As they investigate, they fight over
who gets to eat the cookies. Ask students to suggest ideas; one student might recommend
splitting the cookies, making the critters squeal delightfully. The dog and cat are instructed to
count cookies correctly, causing the cat to bark and growl. The dog teaches the cat that each
cookie can be counted once. Students are asked to anticipate the number of cookies each
creature will receive, and the cookies are divided evenly among the animals. The text instructs
children to play the missing cookie game in small groups, demonstrating how to play with
others. The game involves removing one cookie, shuffling the remaining ones, and
discovering missing ones. The class should be divided into groups of similar ability levels,
assigned a stack of numbered cookies, and a quiet room to play. Walk around the room and
observe and assist where needed. Spend more time with students who seem less confident.

HOW IS THE ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE?

The activity “Counting Cookies!” is developmentally appropriate for the children’s because
they going to practice their detective skills as they play a Missing Cookie Game and identify
missing numbers.
