phonetic method
- phonetic method involves encouraging to the patient to pronounce certain consonants such
as "M" by asking the patient to repeat words like "swim" or "mississippi"
- the mandible returns to its postural rest position 1-2 seconds after the exercise. the patient is
asked not to change the jaw, lip or tongue posture after exercise and clinicial studies the
interocclusal space by parting the patient's lips
command method
patient is asked to perform certain functions, such as swallowing ath the end of which the
mandible sponteneously returns to rest position
1. intraoral methods
- direct method
vernier calipers can be directly used to measure the interocclusal clearance in canine region
- indirect method
impression material can be used to register the freeway space
2. extraoral methods
- direct method
two reference points are marked, using sticky plaster, one on nose and the other on the chin in
mid-sagital plane
the distance between these two reference points is measured at the rest position and at centric
occlusion. the difference between the two measurements in the freeway space
- indirect method
> chepalometric registration
lateral chepalograms, one taken at the rest position and the other at centric occlusion, are
taken to determine the freeway space
> kinesiographic registration
this method uses a magnet, fixed on the lower anterior, and the mandibular mounts are
recorded by scissors and are then processed in the kinesiograph
