How to

Identify Your
Skin’s
Undertones
and What This
Means for You
Francesca Cairns Image Consultant
Why does your undertone matter?
When it comes to finding a new lipstick or foundation, colour is
usually what makes us pick up the item first

It’s common to love a colour at the beauty counter only to discover

that it doesn’t look right when you try it on at home.

This usually has to do with your skin’s undertone.

Understanding your skin’s undertone is key to finding the right

foundation and choosing the best Colour palettes for your hue.

This is something I can help you with in a Colour Analysis as it can be

hard to determine our own undertone. Once I know your undertone
then I can begin the Colour Analysis and determine your 'Colour
Season'
What are the different undertones?
There are three main undertones: warm, cool, and
neutral. Warm undertones range from peach to yellow
and golden.

Cool undertones include pink and bluish hues.

If you have a neutral undertone, this means that your

undertones are roughly the same colour as your actual
skin tone.

Skin colour has nothing to do with undertone. Even the

fairest skin can have warm undertones, and darker skin
can have cool ones.
How can I tell which one I am?
A Colour Analysis is the best place to start when learning your
undertone and season.
I have added a few things you can do in the meantime to try
work out your undertone.

Silver/gold test.
Many people are more attracted to either silver or gold
because of the way it looks against their skin. If you like the way
traditional yellow gold looks on your skin, you’re more likely to
have warm or olive undertones.

Silver, platinum, and rose gold tends to look more flattering on

cooler undertones.

(This doesn't always work as I have met people who wear silver
but have a warm undertone etc.)
Think about your eye and hair colour
Although you might play with different hair dye colours
and eye shadows, your natural eye and hair colour may
provide some insights into your undertones.

Look at the inside of your wrist. What colour do your

veins predominately appear?

More Blue? (Cool) Green? (Warm) Purple or a mix?

(neutral or could be cool or warm)

The neutral test

Compare warm and cool neutrals to your skin, wearing no
makeup. Test white versus cream which tone looks better
next to your skin?
Overtone Vs. Undertone

People often struggle with undertone as most people

think it has something to do with the overtone colour of
their skin (it doesn’t)
