BOUNDARIES:

Spain is located in the southwest of Europe and occupies 80% of the Iberian Peninsula, which it
shares with Portugal. In turn, it borders to the north with the Cantabrian Sea, France and Andorra,
to the east with the Mediterranean Sea, to the south with the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic
Ocean, and to the west with the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal.

Spain has an area of 505,957 km2, including its peninsular area, the territory occupied by the
Balearic Islands, the Canary Archipelago and the Spanish cities located in North Africa: Ceuta and
Melilla.

CAPITAL:

Madrid is the capital of Spain. With a population of 4 million 726 thousand inhabitants, it is the
headquarters of the most important national institutions and public administration organizations.
Among them are the Congress of Deputies, the Senate and the House of His Majesty, King Juan
Carlos of Spain and the National Library. Furthermore, Madrid is a cosmopolitan city that combines
the most modern infrastructure and its status as an economic, financial, administrative and service
center with an immense cultural and artistic heritage, a legacy of centuries of exciting history.

POLITICAL-TERRITORIAL DIVISION:

Spain is divided into 17 Autonomous Communities. Each has its own governing bodies and
representative institutions. Spain also has two autonomous cities: Ceuta and Melilla
