Read the text. For questions 1-10, choose the correct answer (А, В or C).
From cars on the road to planes in the sky, we are making our world noisier and noisier all the
time. In the last 30 years, for example, the traffic on American roads has increased by 300%. And in the
next 10 years, it is going to double again! But what are the consequences of all this noise?
Most animals communicate by sound, just like us. But when animals can't hear each other, it
causes serious problems. One sad example is the sparrow in England. Recent research found that
because of traffic noise, some sparrows don't hear the hunger calls from their young. Therefore, they
don't feed them enough. Noise pollution also makes it difficult for some animals to hunt. Animals like
bats and owls, for example, rely on their hearing to find their prey. But because of the noise from traffic,
they struggle to find enough food to eat. Even marine wildlife feels the effects of noise pollution. Recent
research, has found that the noises that come from ships, boats and oil and gas rigs make it more
difficult for dolphins to find prey, warn others of predators, and attract mates.
So, what can we do about noise pollution from our modes of transport? The problem is, cars,
planes and ships are everywhere, and they're not going to go away soon. One thing that governments can
do is avoid building roads near national parks. If we do this, then at least some animals will live in peace
and quiet!
