For each of the practice passages, identify the inadequacies in the evidence and Explain.
1. A new study shows that teens who send excessive numbers of text messages may be at risk for
unhealthy behaviors. The study focused upon a sample of students in an urban Michigan county, most of
whom were from a lower socioeconomic status, were a member of a minority group, and had no father in
the home. Researchers found that teens who excessively text are 50 percent more likely to have tried
cigarettes, 45 percent more likely to be in a physical fight, and 35 percent more likely to be binge
drinkers. This study should serve as a wake-up call to parents and prompt them to discourage their
children from texting excessively.
Conclusion: Parents should discourage their children from texting excessively.
Reason: A new study shows that teens who send excessive numbers of text messages may be at risk for
unhealthy behaviors.
Inadequacies:
1. The sample size is small
2. The breadth ís questionable. The survey was just only students in an urban Michigan county, and it is
not diverse enough to be typical for all the teens.
3, And it lacks the randomness, because it is about most of students were from a lower socioeconomic
status, were a member of a minority group, and had no father in the home.
4. The survey does not define what is unhealthy behaviors, and in the text, there are tried ciagrettes, fight
and drinkers which is not clearly defined that unhealthy behaviors.
2. Participating in social networking activities such as Facebook and Twitter reduces college students’
abilities to maintain adequate writing and grammar skills. A recent study of 10,000 students during a
writing examination conducted by several universities across the United States revealed that students who
actively engaged in social networking had poorer writing and grammar skills by more than 50%
compared to scores of those students who did not participate on social networking sites.
Conclusion: Participating in social networking activities such as Facebook and Twitter reduces college
students’ abilities to maintain adequate writing and grammar skills
Reason: A recent study across United States prove participant in Internet will get poor writing and
grammar skills
Problems:
1. The same size might be large but we don’t know how the survey conducted because the survey did not
provide a systematic research like: Name of university, The number of university
2. The diversity is questionable because the statistics is not clear, and the survey just about students in US
while the conclusions is about people all around the world
