Exp 8 - Delta Modulator

DELTA MODULATOR & DEMODULATOR


AIM:
To design, set up and study the working of a delta modulator and demodulator circuit.

OBJECTIVE
After completing the experiment, student will be able to setup delta modulator circuit and
demodulator circuit and identify the waveforms.

THEORY
 Delta Modulation (DM) is a differential PCM scheme in which the difference signal is
encoded into a single bit. This single bit is transmitted per sample to indicate whether the
signal is larger or smaller than the previous sample. The difference between the input and the
approximation is quantized into two levels ±Δ corresponding to positive or negative
difference respectively. Here in the circuit the modulating signal m(t) and its quantized
approximation m̂(t) are applied to the comparator. Comparator provides a high level output
when m(t) > m̂(t) and provides low level output when m(t) < m̂(t). The output of the
comparator is fed to a sample and hold circuit made by a D flip flop. Pulses at the output of D
flip flop is made bipolar by an op-amp comparator. IC 741 is used as the comparator whose
output becomes +5 V when the voltage at its pin 3 is greater than +0.5 V. The demodulator
consists of an integrator and a low pass filter.

PROCEDURE
1. Test all the components and probes.
2. Set up the circuit as shown in figure on the bread board.
3. Feed 5 Vpp, 100Hz sine wave as message signal.
4. Apply 2 KHz square wave signal as clock signal.
5. Observe Delta modulated output and setup demodulator circuit.
6. Observe demodulated output.
7. Plot the above waveforms
