Change/Improvement - Inspection SOP and Warranty Acceptance Criteria for Windshield Glass
Objective - Reduce warranty rejections
Corrective Action - Follow the below mentioned S.O.P

Covered under warranty

S.O.P
NOT covered under warranty

Step – 1

Clean the damaged windshield area (using

compressed air/lint cloth) and then
perform visual inspection for evidence of
external impact.

Check on the severity of the damage, and Fig. 01 Fig. 02

categorize it amongst one of the below
three types -

 Low impact damage will appear as a

small point along a single crack,
which can be confirmed by the pen
test (Ref: Fig. 01 & 02).

#Pen Test: Slowly run the tip of a ballpoint

pen along the crack. If there is an impact
present, the tip will get stuck/catch in the Fig. 03
depression caused by the impact.

 Moderate impact damage will appear

as multiple cracks radiating from a
point. (Ref: Fig.03)

 High impact damage appears as many

cracks radiating from the impact
area. (Ref: Fig.04)

Step – 2

If visual inspection and pen test do not

confirm surface damage, confirm by
pointing a flashlight at a 45° angle along
the cracks in the black painted/pasting
area of the windshield.

(Refer to the illustration: Fig. 05).

Look for radial crack similar to the

illustration: Fig.05 on the right. Fig. 05

#Note: Such cracks are evidence of A - Pillar

external impact and hence will NOT be
covered under warranty. Crack originating from the
Pillar-glass interface (with
no signs of external impact)
The below cases CAN BE considered
under warranty –

 Hairline cracks (with no evidence of

external impact) that have originated
at the pillar–glass interface, and
propagated inwards. (Fig. 06)
(Investigate that in history, any
accidental/repair work carried out on
vehicle pertaining to “A” pillar or roof top
damage, wherein Windshield has been Fig. 06
removed & refitted. There is a chance of
some patchy repair finish mark causing
uneven surface which might result in
crack formation in a similar pattern due
to vibrations while driving.)

 Evidence of Air (or) foreign particle

inclusions in the glass. (Fig. 07)
Fig. 07 Fig. 08
 Evidence of waviness (or) other
distortions in the glass when viewed
from inside. (Fig. 08)

 Manufacturing deformities such as

delamination (Fig. 09), decolouration,
etc. Delamination
