(b) II < I < III
(c) I < III < II
(d) II < III < I
Directions: These questions consist of two statements, each printed as
Assertion and Reason. While answering these questions, you are required to
choose any one of the following four responses.
(a) If both Assertion and Reason are correct and the Reason is a correct
explanation of the Assertion.
(b) If both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not a correct
explanation of the Assertion.
(c) If the Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
(d) If both the Assertion and Reason are incorrect.

7 Assertion : SN2 reaction of an optically active aryl halide with an aqueous 1

solution of KOH always gives an alcohol with opposite sign of rotation.
Reason : SN2 reactions always proceed with inversion of configuration.

SNBP’s/2023-24/XII/PT -I/CHEMISTRY 2
8 Q.2. Assertion : If a liquid solute more volatile than the solvent is added to 1
the solvent, the vapour pressure of the solution may increase i.e., ps > po.
Reason : In the presence of a more volatile liquid solute, only the solute will
form the vapours and solvent will not.

SECTION B

9 The boiling points of isomeric haloalkenes decrease with increase in 2

branching. Explain
10 Out of o-nitro phenol and p-nitro phenol, which is more volatile? Explain. 2
The C-O bond is much shorter in phenol than in ethanol. Give reason? 2
11 OR
What is dissolution and Crystallization?

SECTION C

12 A first-order reaction takes 20 minutes for 25% decomposition. Calculate the 3

time when 75% of the reaction will be completed.

(Given : log 2 = 0·3010, log 3 = 0·4771, log 4 = 0·6021)

13 What are ambident nucleophiles? Explain with an example. 3

14 Calculate the mass of Urea required in making 2.5 kg of 0.25 molal aqueous 3
solution.
15 What happens when 3
(i) ethanol is treated with Cu at 573 K,
(ii) phenol is treated with CH3COCl/anhydrous AlCl3,
(iii) ethyl chloride is treated with NaOCH3?
SECTION D
16 Nucleophilic substitution reactions are of two types; substitution nucleophilic 4
bimolecular (SN2) and substitution nucleophilic unimolecular (SN1) depending
on molecules taking part in determining the rate of reaction. Reactivity of alkyl
halide towards SN1 and SN2 reactions depends on various factors such as steric
hindrance, stability of intermediate or transition state and polarity of solvent.
SN2 reaction mechanism is favoured mostly by primary alkyl halide or transition
state and polarity of solvent, SN2 reaction mechanism is favoured mostly by
primary alkyl halide then secondary and then tertiary. This order is reversed in
case of SN1 reactions.

The following questions are multiple choice question. Choose the most
appropriate answer:

(iii) The most reactive nucleophile among the following is

(a) CH3O-
(b) C6H5O-
(c) (CH3)2CHO-
(d) (CH3)3CO-

(iv) Tertiary alkyl halides are practically inert to substitution by SN2
