SECTION – A
Q. No. 1 to 5 - Select the correct answers from the codes i), ii), iii) and iv).
(i) Both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
(ii) Both assertion and reason are true and the reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
(iii) Assertion is true but the reason is false.
(iv) Assertion is false but the reason is true.

1
1. Assertion: When a solution is separated from the pure solvent by a semipermeable membrane,
the solvent molecules pass through it from pure solvent side to the solution side.
Reason: Diffusion of solvent occurs from a region of high concentration solution to a region of
low concentration solution.
2. Assertion: Conductivity of all electrolytes decreases on dilution.
Reason: On dilution number of ions per unit volume decreases.
3. Assertion: tert-Butyl bromide undergoes Wurtz reaction to give 2, 2, 3, 3- tetramethylbutane.
Reason: In Wurtz reaction, alkyl halides react with sodium in dry ether to give hydrocarbon
containing double the number of carbon atoms present in the halide.
4. Assertion: Presence of a nitro group at ortho or para position increases the reactivity of
haloarenes towards nucleophilic substitution.
Reason: Nitro group, being an electron withdrawing group decreases the electron density over
the benzene ring.
5. Assertion: Bond angle in ethers is slightly less than the tetrahedral angle.
Reason: There is a repulsion between the two bulky (—R) groups.
Q. No. 6 to 10 are one-word answers:

10. What is the medical condition known as which arises due to severe oxygen deficiency
syndrome at high altitudes.
Read the given passage and answer the questions 11 to 15 that follow:
Both conductivity and molar conductivity change with the concentration of the electrolyte.
Conductivity always decreases with decrease in concentration both, for weak and strong
electrolytes. Molar conductivity increases with decrease in concentration. It has been found that
decrease in κ on dilution of a solution is more than compensated by increase in its volume.
Physically, it means that at a given concentration, Λm can be defined as the conductance of the
electrolytic solution kept between the electrodes of a conductivity cell at unit distance but having

2
area of cross section large enough to accommodate sufficient volume of solution that contains
one mole of the electrolyte. When concentration approaches zero, the molar conductivity is
known as limiting molar conductivity.

__________.
(i) less than the rate of crystallisation
(ii) greater than the rate of crystallisation
(iii) equal to the rate of crystallisation
(iv) zero
17. If two liquids A and B form minimum boiling azeotrope at some specific composition then
_______________.
(i) A–B interactions are stronger than those between A–A or B–B.
(ii) vapour pressure of solution increases because more number of molecules of liquids A and B
can escape from the solution.
(iii) vapour pressure of solution decreases because less number of molecules of only one of the
liquids escape from the solution.
(iv) A–B interactions are weaker than those between A–A or B–B.
