COM1005: Topic 3 (September 13)

Topic 3- Typography

Step 1 : If you have not already done so, read and complete the Typography Worksheet first.
- Don’t forget to make your own copy!

k/edit?usp=drive_web&authuser=0.
- Be sure you have this ready to submit on Google Classroom.

Step 2: Answer the following questions. Be sure to write in full sentences, cite the sources you use, and to
answer each question completely.

1. What is the Definition of Typography (in your own words)?

It’s a way to change up the writing by making the viewer's eyes pop. Whether it’s serious, or it
could be happy moods, which call for a fun font.

2. What are the five basic classifications of typefaces? (List the 5 basic typefaces).
Serif sans, serif, monospaced , scripted, display

3. What is the definition of a typeface?

A certain design of type

4. Why is typography important?

It is important because it appeals to viewers to go to businesses or products, and it helps
with the economy because of advertising.

Step 3 : Opening Activity: Initial of Your Name (Pt 1 and Pt 2)

Instructions:
Part 1:
Experiment with the first initial of your name. Try 5 different fonts and see how the personality of the
letter changes based on your selections. Describe/ explain how each font changes the meaning/ intention/
personality of the letter in at least 1 sentence each.

L L L L
This one is more This font is this font is more This font is more like

Others, mainly makes it seem proper most likely for , used in superhero
For essay writing . advertising movies or sports
movies.

L
This font is more non realistic, mainly
for people who like video games and kids.
Then, after you have followed the instructions for the 5 different fonts, in at least 2 sentences write (a)
which font you feel best represents you (b) explain why by describing aspects of your own personality!
Don’t be vague. I need to be able to see the connection between the design element and who you are as a
person to ensure you are being reflective.

In my opinion, I prefer the times new roman, the more serious one. It just seems more professional, and
that’s the way I prefer it.

Part 2:
Explore available fonts on this Google Doc. Notice how many you have available and how different they
are. Some will be similar looking, others will be very unique. Each typeface has its own strengths and
characteristics. Each has its own personality. Choose 9 typefaces that you think have a quality you can
identify. Some examples might be rounded, bubbly, linear, or chunky.

Then, create a 3x3 grid (9 boxes total) of typefaces and a descriptive line of each text. Try to select 9
typefaces that demonstrate variety.

Example of what I expect:

T is for times new roman N is for

L is for lobster
nosifer
L is for luckiest guy P is for pacifico
F is for faster

P is for F is for fredericka

S is for

Step 4- The “Real” World

Instructions: Find 10 photos of different type treatments on Google. Consider the way type is used on
food labels, in novels, or on signs, for example. Pay particular attention to the way in which different
fonts are used together. Upload your 10 photos in the space below, and then in a paragraph,
explain what you noticed about how your attention is captured in a certain way and any other
observations you made during this activity. (Remember to write in full, complete thoughts).

Stuck? Remember to refer to the handout “Typography– Worksheet” if you need ideas :)
What I had noticed is how the main point pops out. The point the creator is making
is already there. It’s popped up so you can see it as soon as you open the website or
advertisement. Also, it could be a visually appealing font, so people want to look
more at its info. It could also be what your business is. If you have a gaming
company, you can use a gaming font to go with it.
Step 5- Mood & Typography

The fun thing about typography is the design and aesthetic that letters can set. They have such a strong
quality to set a specific mood or setting for the audience to interpret. So, you are going to explain why the
following movie titles have their

Step 6: Mini Task: Quote with a Background

1. Your job is to find 1 different quote with the author's name.

2. A separate picture for the background with NO words (save your found pictures to desktop).
3. Use a specific font to convey the quote.
4. Explain why you chose to use that specific font, quote and visual in 3 sentences or more no less.

Example of what I am looking for

Example:

This quote by Helen Keller, is meant to provide positive encouragement to the reader. I used a
simple blending font to give a happy and calming tone to the visual. The word “sunshine” is given
a fade-like neutral design and draws the eyes to the sunset in the image. This advertisement is
meant to encourage positivity.

Step 7: Typography In the Right and Wrong
INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Browse a website that stores hundreds of interesting fonts. Use the website, Dafont.com,
a clearinghouse for all kinds of fonts, many of which you can download and install for
free. As you browse, keep your eyes open for fonts that would be good for each of the
following. Be sure to choose a different font for each, label that font, and copy that
font underneath each question:

○ Which font would you use for a school report? Times new roman
○ Which font would you use for a birthday party banner? Luckiest
guy
○ Which font would you use for a wedding invitation? Calligrafitti
○ Which font would you use for a computer advertisement? SYncopate
○ Which font would you use for a heavy metal album cover? ROck heart
○ Which font would you use for a mystery novel? Playfair display
○ Which font would you use for a pirate movie poster? Pirata one

2. In the following situations, determine which font would be most inappropriate and
explain your choice in one or two sentences. Again, copy the font below each bullet point
and also explain your choice there as well.
○ A business letter Nosifer : This would not be good because it’s more
of a spooky font for book writing, it isn’t a serious font, so it would not be
professional.
○ A company website Arial: Arial is just a boring font, so it wouldn’t be
appealing for viewers and customers.
○ A sign that says “Do Not Enter” Calligrafiti: This just seems like it’s not serious
enough,, as people would not listen to this fancy font

3. Now to create! Log onto Canva and make a poster that uses an improper font for the
occasion of your choice. Be sure to include images as well to make the poster appealing.
Be sure to take a screenshot of it and paste it here after!

4. Bonus question (1 extra mark) Why would a teacher or professor expect reports written in
only a simple font like Times New Roman?
