between pins 12 and 13. This happens automatically when the unit is locked into the mounting
tray with the connector in place.
(b) Jumper pins 12 and 13 on the ELT.
CAUTION: An incorrect jumper can cause physical damage, it is recommended that this step be
completed only by an experienced technician/mechanic. You can get a test plug from ARTEX
(p/n 151-2012) to be used to complete this test.
(c) Put the emergency locator transmitter master switch in the OFF position.
(d) Using an AM receiver or airplane VHF receiver, tune to 121.5 Mhz and make sure that the signal is being transmitted
while performing a functional test of the ELT system.
1 Perform test using AM receiver.
a Put the AM antenna approximately 6.00 inches (152.4 mm) from activated ELT.
b Make sure that the ELT aural tone is heard on the AM receiver.
NOTE: This is not a measured check, but it does give an indication if the switch is activated.
c Hold ELT transmitter firmly in one hand, and thrust forward in a throwing motion, followed by a sudden
reversal of the ELT transmitter. Make sure that the G switch has been actuated.
d Following activation, reset the G switch by placing the master switch to the ON position and then back to
the off position.
e Remove the jumper from pins 12 and 13 on ELT.
f Install the emergency locator transmitter in airplane. Refer to ARTEX ELT C406-N Emergency Locator
Transmitter System - Maintenance Practices.
g Complete the ELT Power Verification Test.
2 Complete the test with the airplane VHF receiver adjusted to 121.5 Mhz.
NOTE: A VHF receiver is sensitive to ELT weak signals emitted, even with radiating ELT antenna
disconnected. Thus, you cannot make sure there is ELT system integrity or give the same
level of confidence as does an AM receiver.

(3) ELT Power Verification Test.
CAUTION: Complete operational testing of an ELT only during the first five minutes after each hour. If it is
necessary to do the operational test at a time not included within the first five minutes after the
hour, the tests must be coordinated with the nearest FAA tower or flight service station. Refer to
the FAA Advisory Circular AC-91-44A.
(a) Use a small hand held AM radio or use the airplane VHF receiver, tuned to 121.5 Mhz, to make sure that the signal is
being transmitted when performing this test.
1 Put a small hand held AM radio, tuned to any frequency, within six inches of the emergency locator antenna. The
ELT aural tone will be heard on the AM radio receiver.
NOTE: This is not a measured check, but it does give confidence that the G switch is activated.
The airplane VHF receiver, tuned to 121.5 Mhz, can also be used. This receiver, however,
is more sensitive and could pick up a weak signal even if the radiating ELT antenna is
disconnected. Thus it does not examine the integrity of the ELT system or give the same
level of confidence as does the AM radio.
(b) Control Input/Test Condition.
1 Before you connect an external power source to airplane, put the battery switch to OFF.
2 Connect external power source to airplane and adjust to 28 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.
3 Place the BATT switch to the BATT position.
4 Make sure that the airplane avionics switch is in OFF position.
5 Put the ELT unit switch to OFF.
6 Put the ELT switch/light switch to OFF.
7 Put the front panel of the ELT cockpit switch to ON, wait one second, then put it back to ARM.
8 The ELT panel light illuminates and displays BLINKING WHILE ON.
a Make sure that three sweeps of audio signal heard on the receiver, approximately one second in length,
then put the ELT panel switch to ARM.
b Make sure that the ELT cockpit panel light illuminates and displays BLINKING WHILE ON. Make sure that
three sweeps of audio signal are heard on the receiver and the front ELT cockpit panel light illuminates
immediately.
NOTE: The microprocessor in the ELT does a check of the G switch latching circuit pins 12
and 13 on the ELT tray connector. The processor will not illuminate the ELT cockpit
panel light if the G switch does not operate correctly.
NOTE: During the swept tone, portions of the audio will emit the same sound as an ELT in
the pilot’s Com 1 and copilot’s Com 2.

Return the airplane switches to the configuration that follows:
a Put the airplane BATT switch to the OFF position.
b Remove external power source from airplane.
