11. What is atmospheric pressure and how much at sea level?

The pressure at any location on the Earth, caused by the weight of the column of air above it. At sea level,
atmospheric pressure has an average value of one atmosphere and gradually decreases as altitude increases. Also
called barometric pressure.

14.7 psi

12. What is absolute pressure?

Absolute pressure is zero referenced against a perfect vacuum so it is equal to the sum of the available atmospheric
pressure and the gage pressure in the system
Absolute Pressure (PSIA) = Gauge Pressure + Atmospheric Pressure

13. If the Absolute pressure is 114.7psia, calculate gauge pressure?

100psig

14. What is gauge pressure? If the gauge pressure is 100psig, calculate Absolute pressure?
Gauge pressure is zero referenced against ambient air pressure, so it is equal to absolute pressure minus atmosphere
pressure
114.7psia

15. Explain what the differential pressure is? ( ∆P)

Differential pressure is the difference in pressure between two points.

16. Convert 320F to Celsius?

0
0 C

17. What is specific gravity?

Specific Gravity is the ratio of the weight of anything to the weight of water.

18. What is a pump? Write down the main types of pumps in the industry?

A pump is a mechanical device that is used to give energy to a flowing liquid such that the liquid can
overcome the resistance in the hydraulic system. Simply the pump converts mechanical energy into
hydraulic energy given to the flow.
1) Positive Displacement Pumps (PDP)
2) Centrifugal Pumps or Dynamic Head Pump (DHP)

19. Name the different type of PDP?

Piston, Gear, Diaphragm etc.

20. What is Dynamic head pumps?

It is also called Centrifugal pump, DHPs increase the kinetic energy of the flow which is then converted to pressure.
These pumps give very large quantities at low pressures. So they are used in liquid transportation to pump e.g. to
pump oil from treatment stations to storage and export.

21. Name different type of impellers used for centrifugal pump?

Open, semi-open and closed impeller

22. Why we use multistage pump?

Whenever the head required can’t be attained by a single pump, another pump(s) is connected in series or for more
convenience more impellers are arranged in series in the same pump casing. That is we get a “multistage centrifugal
pump”.

23. Describe suction head?

A Suction Head exists when the liquid is taken from a tank where the liquid level is above the centerline of the
pump suction, commonly known as a Flooded Suction.

24. Describe suction lift?

A Suction Lift exists when the liquid is taken from an open to atmosphere tank where the liquid level is below the
centerline of the pump suction.

25. What you know about Total Dynamic head?

Total Dynamic Head (TDH) = Elevation (ft) + Friction (ft)

26. Write the abbreviation

NPSH

NPSHR

NPSHA

TDH

PDP

DHP

27. What will happen if the NPSHA is less than NPSHR?

Cavitation or flashing may occur in the pump suction

28. Explain how you will line up and start a Centrifugal pump?

29. How many types of centrifugal pumps you know?

Two types, backward and forward

30. What is vapour pressure?

The pressure pushing against atmospheric pressure on liquids at elevated temperatures.
