Alcohol is widely available and enjoyed safely and responsibly by many people in our society. For the
vast majority of adults, the consumption of alcohol is considered a form of relaxation and social
entertainment.

However, the misuse and abuse of alcohol can have a devastating effect on individuals, their
families, and on society in general. This is because alcohol is a drug that can have negative effects if
not used carefully and moderately.

People who drink regularly at higher levels are more at risk of health problems such as cancer, heart
disease, chronic ill health, premature death and mental health problems.

The binge consumption of alcohol also increases the risk of injury to both the drinker and others. It
can lead to crime and violence such as physical and sexual assaults, domestic abuse and property
damage.
