FTIR Comes Under Absorption Spectroscopy

Raman works on a variety of samples, including solutions, gels, and films. IR has difficulty with
samples in aqueous mediums, but ATR-IR can work with aqueous samples.

 Strength
Raman is a weaker technique, while IR is stronger.
Dipoles
IR spectra give more importance to strong dipoles, while Raman spectra are sensitive to weak dipoles

 Applications
Raman is good for analyzing polymer backbone structure, chain length, ring opening, and
conformation. IR is good for analyzing side chains, terminal end groups of long-chain
molecules, and functional groups.

 Inorganic systems
Raman has advantages over IR in inorganic systems because glass can be used in Raman. Glass
absorbs infrared radiation and cannot be used in IR.
