3. What is Metallurgy? Explain physical/ chemical processing;

Metallurgy is best known as a science that dives into the chemical and physical ways of metallic
elements. These metals are at low cost and can be extracted from minerals with minimal effort.
The process also requires a substance called flux that is added to the charge of the furnace to
remove the impurities. Flux is a chemical cleaning agent used in metallurgy. Metallurgy is mainly
used to deal with the process of purification of metals and the formation of alloys. Here is a
thermite reaction and redox reaction that is used in metallurgy a lot.

In metallurgy we concentrate the ores using the magnetic separation method. Ores get crushed
and put on top of a conveyor belt. The conveyor belt will start to rotate around two wheels. One
of the wheels is magnetised, therefore the magnetic particles will attach to the magnetic wheel
because of attraction and the non-magnetic particles will fall apart.

In metallurgy, roasting and calcination is the process of putting heat on a concentrated ore
using oxygen.

Chemical metallurgy is the process of extracting metals from ores and then removing the
impurities which then produce pure metals.

Physical chemistry is similar as it is the science of creating useful products out of metals.

Terms: A thermite reaction is a reaction in which a metal oxide is reduced by using aluminum as
the reducing agent. (Single Displacement reaction)

An oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction is a type of chemical reaction that involves a transfer of

electrons between two species. Redox reactions can be synthesis, decomposition, combustion
and single displacement reactions.
Some metallic elements used in metallurgy: aluminum, chromium, copper, magnesium, nickel,
titanium, zinc, and silicon.

Roasting involves the heating of ore lower than its melting point in the presence of air or
oxygen. Calcination involves the thermal decomposition of carbonate ores. Roasting is carried
out mostly for sulfide minerals. During calcination, moisture is driven out from an ore
