Selection of Respiratory Protective Equipment

Be sure to check the oxygen concentration and concentration of contaminants so as to select
respiratory protective equipment that is according to the contamination conditions of the air in the
working environment.
The selection flow chart of respiratory protective equipment shows an outlined selection procedure
based on ISHA*1 and JIS*2.
The oxygen concentration in the above Selection Flow Chart is in compliance with NIOSH *3
regulations.

Reusable Respirator For Gas
Gas respirator removes airborne contaminants by a gas filter to provide clean air for breathing. Our gas respirators have superior
reputation for quality excellence and are favored in a variety of industrial fields. Products by Shigematsu Works have been approved by
the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Gas filters that are not prescribed by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and
Welfare are in accordance with JIS T 8152.

time from the figure.
When the accumulated record of used time reaches the calculated
breakthrough time, dispose the gas filter.
Note: 1) This graph indicates that a gas filter can be used for approx. 350 min. if the
concentration of cyclohexane is 0.02 % (200 ppm) in an atmosphere.
2) The actual breakthrough time will differ depending on temperature and humidity
at the workplace.

Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR)
A Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) removes particulates (dust, fumes, mist) in the working environment using an electric fan and
particle filter.
After particles are removed by the filter, an electric fan sends the purified air to the wearer’s hood, facepiece, etc.
PAPR provides high protective performance and enable much more comfortable breathing in comparison to particulate respirators.

Japanese Government Standards

In accordance with the Industrial Safety and Health Act (Act No. 57 of June 8, 1972) Article 24, "PAPR Requirements" (Public Notice of the
Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare No.455 of November 28, 2014) were enforced from December 1, 2014.

Cause of Reduced Air Flow

1. Do not use in the following atmospheres or situations:
• Oxygen-deficient atmospheres
(oxygen concentration < 19.5 %)
Both 1 and 2 or either. [ In accordance with NIOSH (USA) ]

1. Increased air flow resistance by filter due to particle accumulation. • Airborne contaminants which are unremovable by
filters.
2. Weak battery or degradation.
Please use a supplied-air respirator or self-contained
Please consider working hours and use the battery charged sufficiently, breathing apparatus in such atmospheres.
or choose a model with an alarm system. 2. PAPR is not explosion-proof.
3. Please confirm that the air flow exceeds the minimun air
flow before use.

*1 This table is according to "Application of PAPR Requirements". (Notice of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare Division Labour Standards Bureau 1128,
No.12 of November 28, 2014.)
*2 From a notification issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare "Implementation of: cabinet order amending a portion of the Industrial Safety and Health
Act enforcement order, and of ministry order amending portions of the Ordinance on Dangers due to Specified Chemical Substances and the Ordinance on
Industrial Safety and Health". (Ki-hatsu 1130 No. 4 Nov. 30, 2016)
*3 Use a high air flow type PAPR.
*4 Air purifying respirators for dioxins (level 2) are indicated with "gas mask with antidust capability or air purifying respirator with same or better capability".
Shigematsu recommends a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) with V3/OV filter attached.
V3/OV filter has a filtering efficiency of 99.97% or more, and possesses capability that is the same or better than direct-mount compact gas mask canisters for
organic gases that meet national testing standards.
*5 Can be used after confirming that the protection factor for each worker is at least 100.
*6 Please use full facepiece PAPR. Please confirm that the protection factor is 1,000 or more.
*7 When using a half facepiece PAPR, please confirm that the protection factor is 100 or more for every wearer.
*8 Please use full facepiece PAPR.

Supplied-air respirator is respiratory protective devices supplying clean air to a user
through an air-supply hose. Shigematsu's supplied-air respirators provide superior

Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) are used to protect users against oxygen deficiency, dust, gases and vapors at plants, aboard
vessels, at fire and in tunnels.
Ever since they were first introduced onto the market in 1949, self-contained breathing apparatus have been widely used in such fields as
fire fighting, rescue operations, escape training at fire stations, iron works, chemical plants, nuclear facilities, hotels, etc. throughout Japan.

Eye Protector
Eye protector are used to protect workers’ eyes from dust, chemical splashes and splashed materials generated during work such as
demolition, spray painting and handling of chemical substances in laboratories.
Shigematsu can provide various types of eye protectors, goggles and spectacles. Please select the most suitable eye protectors for your
needs and working environment.
■ Cautions when Selecting Eye Protector
1. Select a respirator combination type if you will use an eye protector together with a respirator.
2. Select goggle type for higher concentrations of dust and splashed materials.
3. Use an eye protector together with a face shield for high-impact flying objects generated by grinding work, stone breakage, etc.
