SilverLining and YOUNGO partnership proposal

SilverLining is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that society has information and
options to address near-term climate risks to protect vulnerable people and sustain natural
systems for the future. We acknowledge the tremendous value and unique perspectives that
young leaders bring to the global climate dialogue. For this reason, SilverLining has launched the
Global Young Leaders Initiative (GYLI), which supports a dialogue among young leaders and
older generations to help put young people at the forefront of future developments in climate
intervention research and policy. On May 4, 2023, GYLI held its second Global Youth Summit on
Near-term Climate Risk and Climate Intervention. It brought together young leaders, advocates,
policymakers, climate scientists, and global experts on climate intervention research and
governance in order to have an open interactive dialogue. In doing so, the summit explored what
actions must be taken on climate intervention research and policy to promote safety and equity,
particularly for youth and the world’s most vulnerable. Our goal is to work together with YOUNGO
to enhance youth understanding and involvement in critical discussions on climate interventions.

Silverlining is pleased to express interest in collaborating with the YOUNGO Adaptation Working
Group, as our work at Silverlining aligns with their objectives and focus areas. The shared goal of
addressing the impacts of climate change and promoting effective adaptation strategies provides
a solid foundation for our collaboration. The knowledge and expertise of the members of the
YOUNGO Adaptation Working Group will contribute to our advocacy work which is to ensure
equitable participation of all voices in climate intervention policies. Through this partnership, we
hope to advance our shared vision of a sustainable and resilient future by fostering knowledge
exchange, innovative solutions, and meaningful partnerships. We look forward to investigating
opportunities for joint initiatives, capitalising on one another's strengths, and making a measurable
impact in the field of climate intervention.

This concept note outlines the objectives, the expected outcomes, and the proposed
implementation of a potential partnership between YOUNGO and SilverLining, focusing on
climate intervention and engaging young leaders in this critical topic.

1. Objectives of the partnership

The partnership between SilverLining and YOUNGO on climate intervention aims to achieve the
following objectives:

Awareness raising: Promote understanding and awareness of climate intervention among youth
and the broader public, emphasizing its potential benefits, risks, and ethical considerations.
Awareness among young people regarding climate intervention is crucial for a variety of reasons.
Youth are the future leaders, decision-makers, and planet stewards. By increasing awareness of
climate intervention, youth can develop a profound understanding of the imperative need for
action and become active contributors to the development of sustainable solutions. Moreover,
climate intervention strategies frequently necessitate long-term planning and execution. By
educating and involving the youth in these strategies, we ensure that the efforts will continue
beyond the current generation. Youth can effectively address climate challenges by contributing
their innovative ideas and distinct perspectives when they are equipped with knowledge.

Youth empowerment: Encourage and support youth to actively engage in discussions, research,
and projects related to climate intervention, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the
discourse. Young people have distinctive perspectives, novel ideas, and a strong desire to bring
positive change. By empowering them to participate in climate intervention discussions, policies,
and planning phases, we draw on their creativity and energy, thereby fostering a more inclusive
and diverse strategy for addressing climate challenges. Their participation brings new insights
and solutions to the table, thereby fostering innovation and contributing to the formation of
effective strategies.

Research support: Provide research guidance, resources, and mentorship to young researchers
interested in studying climate intervention, facilitating their exploration of innovative solutions, and
fostering their growth as future leaders in this field. Research support is crucial for youth involved
in climate intervention, as it enables them to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities
surrounding climate interventions.Research provides a foundation of knowledge and evidence-
based insights and makes young people able to contribute substantively to discussions, policies,
and planning . Through research, young people can investigate innovative solutions, analyse
data, and contribute to the scientific knowledge base, thereby augmenting the efficacy of climate
interventions.

Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing: Foster collaboration between SilverLining and
YOUNGO members, facilitating the exchange of ideas, expertise, and best practices on climate
intervention and youth engagement. Climate intervention requires multidisciplinary approaches
that integrate diverse disciplines of knowledge. Experts from diverse fields, such as climate
science, engineering, policy, economics, and the social sciences, can share their knowledge,
research findings, and data through collaboration. Through the sharing of knowledge and
expertise, we can acquire a more comprehensive understanding of climate intervention dynamics
and develop strategies that effectively address their environmental, social, and economic
dimensions.

2. Expected Outcomes

Through this collaboration, we anticipate the following outcomes:

Increased awareness and knowledge: Young people and the general public will have a good
understanding of climate intervention, including its potential applications, challenges, and
consequences. This enhanced comprehension enables young people and the general public to
participate actively in climate intervention discussions and decision-making processes. It enables
them to offer informed opinions, ask critical questions, and advocate for effective and equitable
climate solutions.

Enhanced youth engagement: Through increased youth participation in climate intervention-

related discussions, research projects, and advocacy, we leverage their energy, creativity, and
passion to drive innovative solutions and inspire local, national, and global action. This active
participation not only improves the efficacy of climate interventions, but also instills a sense of
ownership and responsibility in young people, fostering a lifelong dedication to sustainable
practises and environmental stewardship.

Strengthened research capacity: Young researchers will receive support and guidance through
mentorship programmes, and access to scientific networks that will foster their growth and
development as future leaders in climate intervention. This support enables them to contribute
valuable insights, and innovative solutions that can influence the trajectory of climate intervention
strategies and drive positive change in addressing climate impacts.

Collaborative network: Establish a collaborative network between SilverLining and YOUNGO

stakeholder communities, fostering ongoing collaboration, knowledge sharing, and joint initiatives
to address climate intervention. This collaborative network will facilitate the pooling of expertise,
experiences, and resources, resulting in collective action and accelerating progress towards our
shared objective of climate change adaptation.

3. Implementation Approach:

To achieve the stated objectives and outcomes, the collaboration could involve any of the
following activities:

Joint workshops and webinars: A series of webinars and workshops will be organized that
will help in raising awareness about climate intervention, facilitate discussions, and share
knowledge among youth and relevant stakeholders.

Mentorship and research support: Mentorship and research support will be provided to
young researchers interested in studying climate intervention, including access to resources,
guidance, and networking opportunities.

Capacity building: Capacity building initiatives such as training programs and skill
development workshops will be developed that will assist in enhancing youth capabilities of
understanding climate interventions.

Advocacy and outreach: Youth will be engaged in advocacy efforts to promote youth voices
and perspectives on climate intervention, including participation in relevant conferences, events,
and policy dialogues.

4. Appendix: Background on climate interventions Introduction

According to the IPCC’s recent Sixth Assessment (AR6) synthesis report, even if global
greenhouse gas emissions peak before 2025 and are slashed 43% by 2030, it is “almost
inevitable” that the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal will temporarily be breached in the decades
ahead. As a result, stakeholders around the world are beginning to consider “climate
interventions” as possible avenues for reducing the increasing likelihood of, and risks associated
with, overshooting 1.5°C. Climate interventions are approaches for rapidly reducing warming or
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, commonly grouped into two categories: sunlight reflection
methods or solar climate interventions (SCI), and carbon dioxide removal (CDR). These
approaches have the potential to help maintain the stability of the climate while emissions
reduction efforts continue in the short and long term.
