Electrochemistry-extra question

1. the equilibrium constant related to E0cell and not Ecell. why?

Ans:- at equilibrium ,there is no change in concentration of ion occurs ,
Ecell= 0. Hence equilibrium constant related to E0cell and not Ecell.

2. why , dry cell becomes dead after a long time even though it has not be used.
ans:-ammonium chloride is acidic , corrodes zinc container even if the cell is
not in use.

3. What is sacrificial protection?

Ans:-in this method , the surface of the metal to be protected is coated with
more reactive metal( metal with electrode potential less than the electrode
potential of the metal to be protected from corrosion.)being more reactive , it
will take part in redox reaction and save the other metal. In other word , it will
sacrifice itself for the sake of metal to be protected.

4. why is rusting of iron is quicker in saline medium than in water?

ans:- saline water contain water soluble salts which act as electrolyte . they
help in dissociation of water and promote rusting.

5. alkaline medium inhibit the rusting of iron.

ans:-OH- ions released in the alkaline medium combine with the H+ ions
made available from H2CO3 to from H2O.since the H+ ions take part in the
redox reaction responsible for the rusting of iron , removal of this ion
prevent rusting.

6. articles of iron are always coated with zinc .explain

( why iron does not rust even if zinc coating is broken in a galvanized iron pipe)
(can we use tin in place of zinc for cathodic protection)
ans:- rusting of iron involves oxidation of iron .since the reduction potential of
zinc is less than iron ,zinc under go oxidation in preference to iron . there by
prevent rusting of iron.

7. iron does not rust even if zinc coating on its surface is broken but same is not
true when coating is of tin? Give reason
ans:- reduction potential of tin is more than iron . if a crack appear on the
object of iron coated with tin , iron undergo oxidation in preference to tin .

8. aluminium metal cannot be produced by the electrolysis of aqueous solution of

aluminium salt.
ans:- in aqueous solution ,H+ions will be formed along with Al3+ ions . H+ ions
will be released in preference to Al3+ ions at cathode since their reduction
potential is less. Hence Al3+ ions remains in the solution.

9. What is the effect of carbon dioxide in water on corrosion?

Ans:- the presence of carbon dioxide increases rusting of iron. Water containing
carbon dioxide act as an electrolyte , helps to increase the flow of electron.

10.What are antirust soliutions?

Ans:- anti rust solution are those which retard the corrosion of iron.
Eg;- solution of alkaline phosphate.

11.Given (E0 fe2+/Fe =-0.40v. E0 A3+/A =-0.76v, E0 B2+/B =-0.25. which one is the better
galvanizing agent and why?
Ans:-

12.what is the basic difference between galvanization and cathodic protection of

iron articles?
Galvanizing :- process of coating metal(iron) with zinc is known as galvanizing.
Cathodic protection:- this is also a case of sacrificial protection . this method is
used for the protection of submerged structures, like ships and underground
pipes. In this method , the exposed surface of iron is protected by connecting it
to some more reactive metal( metal with lower reduction potential) such as
magnesium ,zinc or aluminium. The more reactive metal act as anode and loses
electron in preference to iron .
[Thus in case of underground iron pipe is connected to block of magnesium ]
