Chickenpox is an infectious-contagious disease, with very wide spread, with general manifestations, accompanied

by itchy rash, specific to the disease in the form of vesicles, which appear in successive eruptive waves. The
vesicles are deep and their rupture determines the possible bacterial superinfection of the eruptive elements and
the appearance of CICATRICI WHICH SOMETIMES HEALS INCOMPLETELY AND CAN REMAIN DEFINITIVE SIGNS. In
the people chickenpox is also known as "the wind vomiting".

The disease is produced by the varicella-zoster virus. The virus is found especially at the level of lesions on the skin
(in the fluid in the vesicles), which is why the rupture of the vesicles greatly expands the eruption. THE SOURCE OF
INFECTION IS REPRESENTED BY PATIENTS WITH CHICKENPOX, and the transmission is made by direct contact,
from person to person, most often by air. Less often it can also be transmitted through objects contaminated with
secretions from the vesicles of chickenpox. The patient is contagious 1-2 days before the appearance of the rash
and up to 6-7 days after the appearance of the last eruptive wave, that is, until the last vesicle turns into crust and
detaches naturally.

In the first 1-3 days of the disease, fever, headache, muscle pain may occur. The rash initially appears on the trunk,
in the form of red, small bumps. At 12-24 hours, vesicles appear (with clear liquid content), similar to "drops of
dew". In a few days, the contents of the vesicles change, becoming cloudy and cover with crusts (shells). The stage
of the crust can last 10-20 days. The patient is no longer contagious, from the moment the crusts begin to peel off.
In the evolution of the disease appear 2-3 eruptive waves, so lesions can be seen on the skin at different stages.
The older the patient's age, the evolution can be more serious, accompanied by complications. The rash can also
occur on the mucous membranes (in the mouth, inside the eyelids, the, genital mucosa) but also on the hairy skin
of the head. May also occur: fever (over 38C, rarely over 39C), hoarseness, productive cough, abundant nasal
secretions. The patient must be seen by the doctor in order to make the correct diagnosis

The patient should be ISOLATED AT HOME, when the form of the disease is free of complications. The decision to
keep the patient isolated at home and not to admit him in a specialized service (hospital for infectious-contagious
diseases) is taken only by the doctor.

AT HOME IT IS REQUIRED: active rest, fluid intake, correct toilet and performed very often at the level of mucous
membranes, eyes, genital, anal. The patient can take a shower but will not use sponge, preference is given to soap
– neutral gel applied directly by hand, gently, so as not to break the vesicles. Rupture of the vesicles can lead to
scarring. Eyes can be washed with neutral soap, and wiped with saline using sterile compresses. The rash skin is
powdered with mentholated alcohol or mentholated talc. The general bath is allowed only after the fall of the
crusts. In terms of nutrition, no special indications are required, it is recommended to eat light, varied, rich in
fruits and vegetables and avoid foods that contain artificial dyes, additives or other chemicals with allergenic
potential.

The treatment will be prescribed by the doctor after the examination of the patient and is differentiated according
to the patient's age, the presence of complications and other individual criteria. It is important to know that
antibiotics are not administered, because chickenpox is produced by a virus and antibiotics have no effect on
viruses.

The treatment will be symptomatic and has the role of relieving fever, itching / itching, coughing – if any,
headaches. Fever is treated with paracetamol if it exceeds 38.5 (attention to overdose, seek medical advice),
algocalmin in fever over 39. Proper hydration is recommended. Locally, on mucous membranes, solutions
indicated by the doctor can be administered. Itching can be combated with antihistamines.

The disease generally evolves without severe problems, if the few basic principles are observed: ISOLATION,
hygiene, increased attention for high risk categories (very young children, pregnant women, elderly patients,
patients with immunity deficits, patients in convalescence, etc.).
The prognosis is excellent in case of observing the minimum rules of isolation, rest, avoidance of contact with
other seriously ill people (TB, pneumonia, etc.). Complications are rare and are treated in the hospital. At the
slightest sign of severity should be called the attending physician.

Important: although it has a relatively rapid evolution towards healing and severe complications are quite rare,
chickenpox remains an anergizing disease (it decreases resistance to other diseases in the period of 4-6 weeks after
the disease), which requires: 1. increased attention, in risk groups 2. administration of a diet rich in fruits,
vegetables, sprouted wheat, fish and 3. administration of vitamins (vitamin A, group B, D, E, K, minerals, Vit C),
possibly in preparations designed especially for children.

The disease is very contagious, with high infectivity 90%, so any case will be announced in the community.
People who come into contact with the sick person can get this disease, if they have not previously had it! Do
not take medications without a doctor's recommendation. Do not treat with antibiotics. Watch out for
medications for fever; overdosing can produce serious intoxication. The immunity offered by chickenpox is
definitive, except for people who have very serious immunity deficiencies. There is a vaccine against chickenpox,
but it does not fit into the national immunization program provided free of charge.

ART. 3(c) isolation - a measure consisting in the physical separation of persons affected by an infectious disease or
of persons carrying the highly pathogenic agent even if they do not show suggestive signs and symptoms, at home
( ...)

ART. 8*) (1) Isolation shall be established for sick persons with suggestive signs and symptoms specific to the case
definition, as well as for persons carrying the high pathogen, even if they do not show suggestive signs and
symptoms.

ART. 8*) (2) The list of infectious-contagious diseases for which the isolation of persons is established at their
home, at the location declared by them or, as the case may be, in sanitary units or in alternative locations attached
to them, as well as the list of basic sanitary units where the sick persons are treated shall be established by
Government Decision.

In order to ensure a fair balance between the need to prevent the spread of an infectious-contagious disease with
an imminent risk of community transmission and the right to liberty of persons, the confinement measure shall be
established according to the infectious-contagious disease established in accordance with this paragraph, in
compliance with the following standards necessary for the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms:

a) the measure is ordered for a limited period of time, in a non-discriminatory manner and in proportion to the
factual situation that determines it;
(b) the measure is aimed at preventing the spread of an infectious-contagious disease dangerous to the safety of
the person and public health;

c) the measure is established in order to protect the public interest and not to cause an imbalance between the
need to protect public health and the imperative of respecting the freedom of the person.
