Roles and responsibilities of Men, women and children in

traditional African societies.
 Men in traditional African societies were the leaders and
protectors of their families.
 They were also expected to protect the community from
external attacks and would undergo training for this.

 Women on the other hand were usually subordinate to men

meaning, they were under their authority.
 They were valued for their ability to increase the size of the
lineage group or rather the community by giving birth to
children.

 Children were expected to stay at home and help around

with house chores and look after family property.
 Boys were mainly out in the fields looking after cattle and
taking them out to graze for pasture.
 When the young boys reached a certain age they were
initiated and set aside from the rest of the community and
later prepared for war.
2. Explain how the young were nurtured in traditional African
communities.

 Boys and girls were raised by their mothers until the age of 6,
learning their family history and the songs that gave meaning to
their lives.
 Later on the girls would proceed to the house of women and boys
would proceed to the house of men and continue with their
learning and training.

3. What would you say are the challenges of trying to preserve

African traditional teachings and accepting change.

 I would say the challenges come and change from time to

time.
 One of the main things that influences the change and lack of
preserving our African culture is a lot of influence from the
West.
 From the way they dress, to how they talk and even how they
do their activities has made us forget about our African culture
and teachings and completely drift away.
 Another challenge is some of the African culture and teachings
is quite hard to preserve and keep doing them in this present
day and time.
 Because what our ancestors used to do back then has
completely changed today and even the way we carry out our
day to day activities, and our lifestyle too.
