Speech format - seniors

Prop 1 - Panel In today’s world (this is where you start with world building which means tell us
the status quo related to your motion. If a policy motion, then identify the harms in the status
quo which your side will resolve). Describe the world from proposition’s perspective in at least 5
to 6 lines.

Team stance - Our team believes ……….

Our model is
If it is a policy motion - introduce a model

If it is a value motion present your burden of proof ( what is it that you need to prove to win this
debate)

Now the team split - I ( speaker 1) will speak about…… ( give titles of your arguments)
Speaker 2 will speak about ……

Moving to my first arg -

Title of the argument - it is the impact we bring on our side of the motion

What is the problem = status quo

Thesis/Claim - explain what you mean

1. 1st reason to prove this is true

2. 2nd reason to prove this is true
3. 3rd reason to believe this is true

Now what is the impact - Why does it matter that this change has occurred?

Why is this impact relatively more important than other impacts/other sides? (Weighing – Why is
this important? It is similar to what opp may say,,,,,,,,,,but we strongly believe.

Before we move on, are there any POI’s

Moving on to my 2nd arg

Use same format as above

After the second argument is presented ( if there is time left) so what have I presented in my
speech. You can summarize your main points
Opp 1 - Always start by responding to their model - prove it is inefficient, inaccurate etc.

If you agree with the problem then you must present a counter model

Good Morning/ Evening - let me begin with my team’s stance.

We strongly believe …. Present a counter model if you have one or describe status quo from
your side.

Moving on, some responses to the prop’s arguments

Speaker 1 said —-------------------

But we we believe that ( this is where you either disprove, mitigate or flip the argument)
Explain the refutation
Explain the damage/harm this does to the prop’s argument - does this prove their impact is not
exclusive or benefits are symmetrical or why our impact is more important

Disprove: when you don’t agree with something presented. This could be to do with the chain of
reasoning, or an incorrect statement that they presented ect…

Mitigate: when you agree with the point brought up but not the importance or impact (make it
seem less significant in the scope of the debate)

Flip: when you flip the argument to work in your favour. Eg.

Now the team split - I ( speaker 1) will speak about…… ( give titles of your arguments)
Speaker 2 will speak about ……

Before I start with arguments, are there any POI’s

Moving to my first argument

Title of the argument - it is the impact we bring on our side of the motion

What is the problem = status quo

Thesis/Claim - explain what you mean

● 1st reason to prove this is true

● 2nd reason to prove this is true
● 3rd reason to believe this is true

Now what is the impact - Why does it matter that this change has occurred
Why is this impact relatively more important than other impacts/other sides? (Weighing – Why is
this important? It is similar to what opp may say,,,,,,,,,,but we strongly believe.

Are there any POI’s ? Move to next argument using same format

Prop/Opp 2 -

Good morning/ evening

Before I begin with my rebuttals and constructives, here are some responses to what Team
oppositions stance

This is where you will clarify any attacks to your model, any misunderstanding and rebuild your
speaker 1 framing.

Now moving on to my refutations

Speaker __________ said

But we we believe that ( this is where you either disprove, mitigate or flip the argument)
Explain the refutation
Explain the damage/harm this does to the prop’s argument (does this prove their impact is not
exclusive or benefits are symmetrical or why our impact is more important)

Before I start with arguments, are there any POI’s

You must ensure that you respond to both their arguments.

Before I move on to my arguments are there any POI’s

Now rebuilding speaker 1’s arg you will rebuild speaker 1 arguments by extending on it or
adding more analysis

Moving on to my argument

Title of the argument - it is the impact we bring on our side of the motion

Prop/ Opp 3 -

First let me begin with refutation to speaker 2’s argument

Speaker 2 said —------------------------

But we believe that ( this is where you either disprove, mitigate or flip the argument)
Explain the refutation
Explain the damage/harm this does to the prop’s argument (does this prove their impact is not
exclusive or benefits are symmetrical or why our impact is more important)

Moving on, are there any POI’s

Now moving on to clashes of the debate

● You must track the arguments presented by both your team and opposite team.
● Try to identify themes, either based on stakeholders or impacts.
● There must be at least 2 if not 3 clashes - either in the form of questions or titles.

First clash is

Either a title or a question for the clash

Present all relevant material from your side and compare with the other side, the goal being that
you prove why you win that clash and why that is the most important clash in the debate.

You must prove to the judge why you win it as well as why it is the most important one in the
debate.

Thus we prove to you why we win this clash

Before I move on to next clash are there any POI’s

Moving on to my next clash

First clash is
Either a title or a question for the clash

Present all relevant material from your side and compare with the other side, the goal being that
you prove why you win that clash and why that is the most important clash in the debate.

You must prove to the judge why you win it as well as why it is the most important one in the
debate. This is why we win this clash. Thus we prove to you why win this clash

Imagine you wake up in team Propositions world vs team oppositions world

Or

themes introduced in 3rd speeches can be used to remind the judge why we have won the
round.
