1. Summary

1.1 Introduction

PUF201/202 transit-time ultrasonic flow meter utilizes transit-time principle, including clamp-on and
insertion. When install clamp-on transducer, without flow stop and pipe cutting, simple installation and
convenient for online comparison. Different sizes of transducers can measure different sizes‟ pipe. Insertion
installation effectively solves clap-on flow meter can not accurately measure with scaling pipe and
non-conductive media. Insertion transducer has stop ball valve, without flow stop or pipe cut, easy to install.
User also can mount hoops on unweldable pipe surface. Optional thermal energy measuring function. Widely
applied in processing monitoring, water balance test, district heating balance test, energy efficiency
monitoring etc.

1.2 Measuring Principle

Transit-time ultrasonic flow meter utilizes the difference of ultrasonic pulse forwarding and reversing
flow rate to measure flow. Use a pair of transducers to transmit and receive signal alternately. Transducer
signal travels faster downstream than upstream. Obtain transit-time △t by measuring signal travel time in
downstream and upstream, the average flow velocity can be detained according to △t and velocity V. The
volume flow Q can be calculated out of the flow velocity V and pipe profile S.

V=K*△t
Q=S*V
K: Constant
S: Pipe sectional area

2. Clamp-on transducer installation

2.1 Measuring point selection

Ultrasonic flow meter is simplest and most convenient to install among all flow meters, just need to select
one suitable measuring point and input the pipe parameters into flow meter, finally bundle transducer on the
pipe.
To keep measuring accuracy, users need to select uniform flow field when choosing measuring point,
generally follow below principles:
 Choose pipe full of fluid, such as the vertical part of pipeline (fluid flows upward) or horizontal pipeline
full of fluid.
 Keep the temperature of measuring point in workable range.
 Keep far from electromagnetic interference source, shaking pipe, frequency conversion and ultrasonic
radial area.
 Measuring point must have necessary straight pipe, generally upstream is 10D(D is diameter of pipe,
same as below) downstream is 5D. Specific installation of straight pipe please refer to below figure:

2.2 Installation Preparation

The appointed pipeline surface must be cleaned completely before installing transducer and ensuring
couplant stick well with pipe.
Do not install transducer on elbows, bends or flow cutting pipes (e.g. electromagnetic flow meter),
enable transducer parallel with pipes.
If transducer can‟t parallel with pipes in limite d location, the transducer can be installed vertically
or inclined when no air bubbles in upper part of the pipe.

2.3 Couplant usage

Use enough couplant to fill the gap between transducer and outer wall of pipe when installing
transducer. Recommend normal temperature couplant in normal temperature and high temperature
couplant in high temperature. Also can use other similar products to replace.

2.4 Transducer mounting method

There are 4 kinds of mounting methods “V”, “Z”, “W” and “N”(“W” and “N” method ar e
uncommonly used). Usually V method is used as standard because it provides longer signal path,
therefore having more accurate measurement of flow velocity. It is recommended for pipes sizes
between 25-6000mm.Special attention should be given when mountin g transducers to ensure that
sensors are aligned in direct line and along the center of the pipe and the transducer mounting line
should be aligned.

V method
Z method is recommended when having serious scaling inside of the pipe, entrained air bubb les,
too thick liner etc. Which can induce a lot of noise into signal. Using this method, the signal is
dispersed in a straight path reducing the possibility of noise induction.

Z Method

2.5 Transducer cable

Upstream transducer connects TRANSMIT, downstream transducer connects RECEIVE. It‟s better
to use exclusive cable.

2.6 Clamp-on transducer installation

The appointed pipeline surface must be cleaned completely before installing transducer and ensuring
couplant stick well with pipe.

Notice:
 Installing transducer parallel with pipes;
 Transducer installing direction.
Note that on horizontal pipe, install transducer at the horizontal axis of pipe sectional area in case
of air bubbles and gravels between transducer and pipe wall.
If transducer can‟t be installed horizontally, then install it vertically or tilt when have no air
bubbles.

2.6.1 Transducer installing distance

Users need mount transducers exactly according to the spacing distance value M25 displays after users input
correct parameter setting.

2.7 Insertion transducer installation

Features
 Solving the problem that when pipe inside scale or erode seriously, clamp -on transducer
signal is poor and can‟t measure properly.
 Can install on cement pipe, cast iron pipe and other non -welding pipe material(need to
customize pipe hoop according pipe outer diameter).
 Special trepanning tools can install the transducer with pressure and water, this ensures stable
production and don‟t need to cut off water in future maintenance.
 Ultrasonic wave releasing probe touches the measured fluid directly, this improve measuring
accuracy and machine‟s stability.
 Compared with electromagnetic flow meter, the insertion transducer is suitable for big
pipeline and it‟s economic and accurate.

2.7.1 Installation position

Insertion transducer installation needs a certain space, generally the distance between pipe outer
wall and wall is over than 700mm.
Requirements:

8

1. Installation place
Insertion transducer installation needs bigger space, the distance L1 between pipe ou ter wall and
wall is over than 540mm (welded pipe e.g. carbon steel pipe and stainless steel pipe). Width
W >(D+540×2)mm, L1 over than 700m(unwelded pipe e.g. PE/PVC, cast iron, cement pipe)
W >(D+700×2)mm(as drawing 1).

Distance

L﹥(D+1000)

Ultrasonic flow meter installation needs certain straight pipe, generally upstream more than 10D,
downstream more than 50D, distance with pump exit or valve more than 30D.

2.7.2 Tool

Installing insertion transducer needs tape, straight screwdriver, cross screwdriver, electric
hand drill, special trepanning tool, monkey spanner and Teflon tape

Welding the ball valve base at points A and B.

Take notice that the central point of ball valve base must overlap with points A and B separately.
2. Ball valve base installation(as drawing 9)
Just need to weld the ball valve base at the pipe outer wall (the surfa ce should be cleaned before
welding) for weldable pipe material (e.g. carbon steel, stainless steel etc.) Take notice that can‟t
mix up with air hole when welding to avoid water leakage and pipe breakage.
Need to adopt special hoop (rubber gasket for seali ng) for unweldable pipe material (e.g. cast iron,
cement pipe, PE/PVC etc.). Welding the ball valve base on hoop in advance, fastening the hoop on
measured pipe, ensuring ball valve base central point to overlap with point A and B, must seal well
to avoid water leakage. Twining Teflon tape on ball valve vase, then screwing on ball valve.

3. Drilling hole(as drawing 10)

Connecting the tapper seal cartridge with special ball valve external thread, tightening up, then
open ball valve, push drill stem until it touches with pipe outer wall, connect and lock the electric
hand drill with drill stem, switch on, start to drill, the drill should keep low speed, enter slowly
during drilling process, to avoid stuck drill and drill break off. After drill ing thoroughly, pull out
drill stem until tapper drill‟s front end back to ball valve element, turn off ball valve, demount
tapper(it‟s better to open up ball valve a little, use water to wash scrap iron, this will be convenient
for transducer installation).

2.8 Transducer inspection

Transducer inspection is used for checking whether the installation is proper and can receive
correct, strong ultrasonic signal. And it enables flow meter to operate realibility. By checking
signal strength, transmitter time, time difference and time ratio to ensure whether the installation
is right.

2.8.1 Signal Strength

Signal strength (displayed in Window M90) indicates a detected strength of the signal both from upstream and
downstream directions. The relevant signal strength is indicated by numbers from 00.0~99.9. 00.0 represents
no signal detected while 99.9 represent maximum signal strength.
Normally, the stronger the signal strength detected, the instrument will work more reliably, as well as the
more stable the measurement value obtained.
Adjust the transducer to the best position and check to ensure that sonic couplant is applied adequately during
installation in order to obtain the maximum signal strength. System normally requires signal strength over
60.0, which is detected from both upstream and downstream directions. If the signal strength detected is too
low, the transducer installation position and the transducer mounting spacing should be re-adjusted and the
pipe should be inspected again. If necessary, change the mounting to the Z method.

2.8.2 Signal Quality (Q value)

Q value is short for Signal Quality (displayed in Window M90). It indicates the level of the signal detected. Q
value is indicated by numbers from 00~99. 00 represents the minimum signal detected while 99 represent the
maximum. System normally requires signal strength over 60.0.

2.8.3 Total Time and Delta Time

“Total Time and Delta Time”, which displays in Window No.93, indicates the condition of the installation.
The measurement calculations in the flow meter are based upon these two parameters. Therefore, when
“Delta Time” fluctuates widely, the flow and velocities fluctuate accordingly. This means that the signal
quality detected is too poor, it may be the resulted of poor pipe-installation conditions, inadequate transducer
installation or incorrect parameter input. Generally, “Delta Time” fluctuation should be less than ±20%. Only
when the pipe diameter is too small or velocity is too low, the fluctuation can be wider.

2.8.4 Transit Time Ratio

Transit Time Ratio indicates whether the transducer mounting spacing is accurate or not. If the installation is
proper, the normal transit time ratio should be 100±3%. Check it in Window M91. If the transit time ratio is
over 100±3%, it is necessary to check:
(1) Whether the parameters (pipe outside diameter, wall thickness, pipe material, liner, etc.) have been
entered correctly;

13
PUTF201/202 series ultrasonic flow meter manual

(2) Whether the transducer mounting spacing is accordance with the display in Window M25;
(3) Whether the transducer is mounted at the pipe‟s centerline on the same diameter;
(4) Whether the wall thickness is too thick or the pipe mounting is distorted in shape, etc.

2.8.5 Warnings

1)Pipe parameters entered must be RIGHT; Otherwise the flow meter will not work properly.
2)During the installation, apply enough couplants in order to stick the transducer onto the pipe wall. While
checking the signal strength and Q value, move the transducer slowly around the mounting site until the
strongest signal and maximum Q value can be obtained. Make sure that the larger the pipe diameter, the more
the transducer should be moved. Check to be sure the mounting spacing is accordance with the display in
Window M25 and the transducer is mounted at the pipe‟s centerline on the same diameter. Pay special
attention to those pipes that formed by steel rolls (pipe with seams), since such pipe is always irregular. If the
signal strength is always displayed as 0.00, that means there is no signal detected. Thus, it is necessary to
check that the parameters (including all the pipe parameters) have been entered accurately. Check to be sure
the transducer mounting method has been selected properly, the pipe is not worn-out, and the liner is not too
thick. Make sure there is fluid in the pipe or the transducer is not very close to a valve or elbow, and there are
not too many air bubbles in the fluid, etc. With the exception of these reasons, if there is still no signal
detected, the measurement site has to be changed.
3) Make sure that the flow meter is able to run properly with high reliability. The stronger the signal strength
displayed, the higher the Q value reached. The longer the flow meter runs accurately, the higher the reliability
of the flow rates displayed. If there is interference from ambient electromagnetic waves or the signal detected
is too poor, the flow value displayed is not reliable; consequently, the capability for reliable operation is
reduced.
4) After the installation is complete, power on the instrument and check the result accordingly.

3. Transmitter installation, cables connection and keyboard operation.

3.1 Transmitter installation point selection

Transmitter should be installed in a position that is convenient for maintaining, calibrating, and
watching the LED. The position should be satisfied below conditions:

-corrosive fluid fall down

because sunlight may make the transmitter temperature rise and exceed the maximum value.

3.2 Transmitter cables connection

7. Thermal Energy Measuring Function

7.1. Introduction

PUTF205 serial ultrasonic flow meter(except handheld) has built -in thermal energy measurement

function. The flow meter can automatically calculate fluid energy, display energy flow rate and net

energy volume.Temperature signal is inputted by T1,T2 terminals.

Thermal energy=flow*density*(T1 enthalpy-T2 enthalpy )

Energy=flow×density×(T1 enthalpy-T2 enthalpy). T1,T2 thermal enthalpy is automatically

calculate by heat meter according to international standard. M05 Display energy flow rate, net flow

rate。

M06 Display T1、T2 temperature value.

M63 and M64 set temperature range

M84 Energy unit selection, GJ or KWh.

M85 Temperature signal source selection, input T1 、T2, fixed temperature difference.

M86 Select the thermal capacity according to international standard.

M87 Open or close energy flow totalizer.

M88 Totalizer multiplier factor selection, default:x1.

M89 Reset energy totalizer

7.2. Thermal energy meter wiring connection

Fluid temperature is generated by Pt1000 signal.T1 connects to inlet temperature sensor,T2

connects outlet temperature sensor.

Menu 05 displays energy flow rate ,net energy volume. Menu 06 displ ays T1,T2 temperature

value.

59
PUTF201/202 series ultrasonic flow meter manual

7.3. Temperature Range

Use menu M63 and M64 to setup temperature range.

When temperature sensor output 1000Ω, temperature is 0℃, and output 1758.56Ω, temperature is

200℃.

User needs to input temperature range 0 -200℃ in menu M63 and M64.

User can check the displayed temperature value in menu M06.

7.4. Temperature Sensor Mounting Requirements

Temperature sensor includes clamp-on and insertion mounting methods.

When mount temperature sensor ,notice following tips:

1) Clamp-on temperature sensor is mounted out of pipe and installed in any position. Insertion temperature

sensor is generally mounted 5D downstream of velocity sensor.

2) It is benefit for measuring accuracy, safe and reliable and easily repaired.

3) Insert the sensor to the central position(vertical mount or tilt mount). If the measuring pipe diameter is

200mm, the temperature sensor depth should be 100mm.

4) Temperature sensor cable is provided by manufacturer ,standard cable length is 1.5m, optional 10m.

7.5. Temperature Sensor Mounting Steps

 Clamp-on

Take notice of the pipe condition after selecting clamp -on temperature sensor mounting

point.Mounting point pipe must keep clean before clamp the temperature sensor on the surface of

pipe. Keep the pipe wall conduct well.

 Insertion

Insertion temperature sensor accuracy is higher than clamp -on as the insertion temperature sensor

is directly contacted with measuring media. There are two methods to mount insertion temperature

sensor after position the mounting point.

 Use ball valve to mount insertion temperature sensor

For weldable pipe(e.g.carbon steel,PVC etc.),weld the ball valve directly on the surface of the

pipe. Do not contain air holes in case of leakage or fracture while welding(clean the pipe surface

around the welding point before welding).

For pipes can‟t be directly welded(e.g.iron steel cast, cement etc.),customized pipe hoops are

required(with sealed gasket). Ball valve base are welded on the hoops in advance, tighten the

60
PUTF201/202 series ultrasonic flow meter manual

hoops on the pipe. Please compress the sealing gasket tightly to avoid leaking.

Connect driller sealed gasket with customized ball valve thread, open ball valve aft er tightening.

Push the driller until it touches the surface of pipe. Lock it, switch on the power, start drilling.

Keep low speed, do not fast, slowly drilling in case of drill bit stuck or broken. After opened, push

out the drill rod until the front of drill bit close to the ball valve center. Close ball valve, unload

driller(it‟s better to open a little ball valve, flush away the scarp iron for easy installation of

sensor).Insert the sensor, adjust the depth, fix it.

Directly open holes on the pipe, insert sensor, weld sensor on the surface of the pipe. Notice:
elements of temperature sensor measuring should reach the central position of the pipe.
