1. Tell us about yourself?

I am pleased to have the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Tewodros Zewdu, and I have a strong
academic background and passion for research in the field of Materials Science and Engineering.
I have completed my bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, where I gained an extensive
understanding of the fundamentals and properties of various solid materials, such as ceramics, polymers,
semiconductors, and composite materials.
After graduating with great distinction, I was honored to receive a fully funded scholarship for a master's
program. During my master's studies, I focused on materials characterization techniques and primarily
engaged in research work. My thesis specifically centered on interfacial engineering of organic solar cells
to improve their performance. I was able to improve the performance of P3HT: PCBM based organic solar
cells upon nickel doping on ETL ZnO.
While pursuing my master's degree, I also worked as an academic and research assistant in the department.
In this role, I had the opportunity to support undergraduate students in their lab works. I also assisted in
enforcing laboratory protocols, maintaining lab equipment, and participated in various research projects,
including the development of biodegradable plastics from waste materials.
Throughout my educational journey, I have consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence, as
evidenced by my academic achievements. My research interests primarily focus on renewable energy
sources, specifically the stability and performance of organic solar cells. This interest stems from my
previous research experiences and the potential for making significant impact for the energy crisis.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that my academic background, dedication, and passion for research make
me an ideal candidate for the PhD program. I am excited about the opportunity to further expand my
knowledge and contribute to the field at TU Graz.

2. Why do u want to do PhD?

I am motivated to pursue a PhD because of my strong interest in renewable energy sources, particularly
solar cells. I firmly believe that enough attention has not been given to addressing the global energy crisis.
By conducting research in this field, I aim to contribute to the development of sustainable energy solutions
that can help mitigate the growing energy demand and global energy crisis.
Solar cells have immense potential as a clean and renewable energy technology. However, there are still
significant challenges that need to be overcome, such as improving their stability and performance. Through
a PhD program, I aspire to go deeper into these challenges and explore innovative approaches to enhance
the efficiency and reliability of organic solar cells for better and sustainable future.
3. Why this Project?
I am particularly interested in this project because it focuses on renewable energy sources, specifically
organic solar cells. During my master's program, I had limited resources in the lab, which prevented me
from exploring this area in-depth. Therefore, I am eager to delve deeper into this field during my PhD
studies. I believe that by conducting thorough research on organic solar cells, I can contribute to the
development of sustainable energy solutions.

4. What is your carrier aspiration?

My career aspiration is to become a leading expert in the field of organic photovoltaics. It involves actively
engaging in research collaborations, publishing influential scientific papers, and presenting my work at
international conferences.
In the long term, my goal is to make a meaningful impact on the field of organic photovoltaics. I aspire to
work in academia, industry, or research institutions, where I can continue to push the boundaries of what is
achievable in solar cell technology.

5. Describe your ideal work/ Lab environment?

In summary, my ideal work/lab environment for organic solar cell research on stability and efficiency
improvement would be characterized by cutting-edge facilities, interdisciplinary collaboration, a supportive
culture of knowledge sharing, and a strong commitment to sustainability.

6. How can you handle a conflict within the group?

1. Encourage open communication: Encourage active listening and foster an atmosphere of mutual respect
and understanding.
2. Identify the underlying issues: It is crucial to identify the root cause of conflicts. Encourage team
members to express their viewpoints and concerns and facilitate discussions to uncover the underlying
issues contributing to the conflict.
3. Focus on common goals: Remind team members of the shared objectives and goals of the PhD
scholarship program. Encourage them to redirect their focus towards these common goals, emphasizing the
importance of working together collaboratively to achieve success.
4. Seek win-win solutions: Encourage the team to explore alternative solutions that address the concerns
of all parties involved. Emphasize the value of finding win-win solutions that satisfy everyone's interests,
rather than resorting to a win-lose mentality.
5. Establish clear guidelines and processes: Set clear expectations for team members regarding their roles,
responsibilities, and decision-making processes. Clearly define how conflicts should be addressed and
resolved within the team to provide a structured framework for handling disagreements.
6. Learn from conflicts: Encourage the team to view conflicts as opportunities for growth and learning.
Reflect on past conflicts and identify strategies to avoid similar issues in the future. Encourage open
dialogue about lessons learned and implement changes as necessary.
7. How do you define success and failure?
Success can be defined as the achievement of a desired outcome, goal, or objective. Success often involves
accomplishing personal or professional aspirations, encompassing various aspects of life, including career
achievements, financial stability, personal relationships, health and well-being, and personal growth.
Ultimately, success is about finding happiness and a sense of purpose in one's endeavors.
On the other hand, failure can be understood as the lack of success or the inability to achieve desired
outcomes or goals. It is often associated with setbacks, disappointment, and a sense of falling short. It can
provide valuable lessons, opportunities for growth, and motivate individuals to learn, reassess their
approach, and strive for improvement. Failure should be seen as a steppingstone towards future success
rather than a definitive endpoint. With the right mindset and resilience, failure can be a catalyst for personal
development and eventual achievement.

8. What are your outside interests?

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have a diverse range of outside interests that contribute to my
personal growth and development. One of my passions is football. I have been playing the sport since a
young age, and it has taught me valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
Furthermore, I am an active member of a charity association that focuses on providing education and
support to underprivileged communities. I have contributed to organizing fundraising events, coordinating
educational programs, and fostering community engagement. This experience has reinforced my
commitment to making a positive difference in society and has honed my abilities to effectively
communicate, inspire, and motivate others.
These outside interests have played a vital role in shaping my character and have instilled in me a strong
sense of determination, empathy, and adaptability
