DESIGN OF HIGHWAY INFRASTRUCTURE
Time : 3 hours Max. Marks : 70
Note : i) First Question is compulsory and answer any four questions from the
remaining six questions. Each question carries 14 Marks.
ii) Answers to each question must be written at one place only and in the
same order as they occur in the question paper.
iii) Missing data, if any, may suitably be assumed.

1. a) What are the objectives of Geometric design?

b) Mention the factors on which off-tracking depends?

c) What are interchange ramps? Mention their advantages.

d) What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of over pass and under
pass?

e) State the factors on which overtaking sight distance depends.

f) What are the requirements of pedestrians?

2. a) What are the important pavement surface characteristics with respect to

highway geometric design? Explain briefly.

b) Enumerate the factors governing the width of carriage way. State the IRC
specifications for width of carriage way for various classes of roads.

3. a) Calculate the stopping sight distance for a passenger car moving at a design
speed of 80 kmph. Assume total reaction time as 2.5 seconds and coefficient
of friction as 0.3.

b) Design the super elevation required at a horizontal curve of radius 350 m for a
speed of 70 kmph. Assume required data suitably.

c) What is an ideal transition curve? Explain.

4. a) What are the different types of traffic islands used? Explain the uses of each.

b) Explain briefly the various factors that are to be considered in the design of
rotary intersection.

of signs; with sketches show the general shape of these types of signs.

b) What are the various types of road markings commonly used in India? What
are the uses of each?

6. a) Explain the guidelines for the design of off street parking facilities. Specify

b) Explain the guidelines and design standards for provision of subways.
