Resumen: Here we develop a view of language as a form of material
engagement, one that foregrounds its embodied and ecological
character. Achieving such a view, however, requires disabusing
ourselves of certain received and deeply entrenched notions. We
present a thought experiment meant to illuminate the materiality of
language, as a technological activity on par with the construction and
manipulation of artifacts. We explore its implications, justifying the
comparison with actual languages while emphasizing revealing
differences. Ultimately, we hope to expose the embodied and enactive
nature of language, offering a view of language as continuous with our
engagement with the environment, as opposed to a picture of
language as an essentially symbolic system or code. [ABSTRACT

Resumen: Clear statements of both extended and enactive conceptions of
cognition can be found in John Dewey and other pragmatists. In this
paper I'll argue that we can find resources in the pragmatists to
address two ongoing debates: (1) in contrast to recent disagreements
between proponents of extended vs enactive cognition, pragmatism
supports a more integrative view--an enactive conception of extended
cognition, and (2) pragmatist views suggest ways to answer the main
objections raised against extended and enactive conceptions--
specifically objections focused on constitution versus causal factors,
and the mark of the mental. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resumen: I evaluate several attempts to integrate standard theories of social
cognition, either theory theory or simulation theory, with aspects of
interaction theory, and especially with the concept of direct social
perception. I refer to these as new hybrid theories of social cognition.
One of the new hybrids accomplishes the integration only by
weakening the concept of mindreading or by understanding
mindreading as targeting the shared situation rather than the other’s
mental states. Hybrids that attempt to accommodate the idea of direct
perception of mental states grant a phenomenological directness only
by maintaining tacit (theory-based) inferences on the subpersonal
level. If such inferential processes are thought to be extra-perceptual,
then perception is neither sufficient nor direct for an understanding of
intentions and emotions. Moreover, insistence on top-down inferential
processes trades off against the possibility of plasticity in the
perceptual system itself. I suggest that a better model than a hybrid
theory would be a pluralist one. A pluralist approach to social cognition
would treat theoretical inference, simulation, direct perception,
interactive skills, etc. as different strategies. The real challenge is to
work out a pluralist account of subpersonal processes. [ABSTRACT

Resumen: Building on both cognitive semantics and enactivist approaches to
cognition, we explore the concept of enactive metaphor and its
implications for learning. Enactive approaches to cognition involve the
idea that online sensory-motor and affective processes shape the way
the perceiver-thinker experiences the world and interacts with others.
Specifically, we argue for an approach to learning through whole-body
engagement in a way that employs enactive metaphors. We
summarize recent empirical studies that show enactive metaphors and
whole-body involvement in virtual and mixed reality environments
support and improve learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resumen: The writer reviews French phenomenological philosopher Maurice
Merleau-Ponty's magnum opus Phenomenology of Perception. In this
book, Merleau-Ponty attempts to show that an explication of the
facticity of the body, the medium that we are, and that places us in-the-
world, is vital for understanding human existence. Despite certain
limitations imposed by the contemporary science and by Merleau-
Ponty's lack of interdisciplinary methodology, Phenomenology of
Perception remains a successful book. Merleau-Ponty's book offers
in-depth phenomenological descriptions of embodied action and
insightful criticisms of traditional philosophy and contemporary
science.

Resumen: In this paper, we first review recent arguments about the direct
perception of the intentions and emotions of others, emphasizing the
role of embodied interaction. We then consider a possible objection to
the direct perception hypothesis from social psychology, related to
phenomena like 'dehumanization' and 'implicit racial bias', which
manifest themselves on a basic bodily level. On the background of
such data, one might object that social perception cannot be direct
since it depends on and can in fact be interrupted by a set of cultural
beliefs. We argue, however, that far from threatening the idea of direct
perception, these findings clearly contradict the idea of hardwired
theory of mind modules. More generally, we suggest that in order to
further the understanding of social cognition we must take seriously
insights about in-group and out-group distinctions and related
phenomena, all of which are currently neglected in the mainstream
social cognition literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social cognition
Resumen: I review the shifting definitions of simulation as found in recent
versions of the simulation theory (ST) of social cognition. I focus on
two concepts that have become central to recent ST in the work of a
number of simulation theorists: the notion of reuse and the notion of
B-formatted representations. I point out specific limitations or
problems involved in these concepts. Although the reuse hypothesis
provides an interesting evolutionary account of how neural
mechanisms may adapt to new tasks, it doesn’t offer an explanation of
how these mechanisms work. In contrast to the genuinely embodied
account that simulation theorists seek, an explanation of social
cognition in terms of B-formatted representations not only remains
disembodied, but also ignores social interaction and remains
solipsistic. I conclude by briefly outlining a non-simulationist enactivist
account that can incorporate the reuse hypothesis. [ABSTRACT

Resumen: Astronauts report certain experiences that can be classified as awe
and wonder when looking out of their space station or shuttle portals at
two different stimuli: the earth and deep space. Based on these
reports, it was of interest to further investigate those types of
experiences by using a mixed-reality environment resembling an
International Space Station workstation designed to expose subjects
to simulated stimuli of the earth and deep space. The study is
multidisciplinary, involving simulation construction, physiological
assessment, psychological testing, textual analysis, and
phenomenological interviews. The goal was to induce in the average
person the experiences and responses of the astronauts. Preliminary
results show promise for using a virtual/mixed-reality environment in a
laboratory when assessing cognitive/affective experiences, such as
awe and wonder, found in a real-world context. [ABSTRACT FROM

Resumen: This article poses a number of questions to Richard Shusterman
concerning his concepts of somaesthetics and body consciousness in
his book Body Consciousness: A Philosophy of Mindfulness and
Somaesthetics. How do the concepts relate to the kind of
forgetfulness of the body that can happen in expert performance?
What is the nature of somatic reflection, and how is it different from
pre-reflective awareness of the body? The article suggests that our
immersed involvement and overt orientation toward things, and toward
other people that concern us, involve bodily practices characterized by
a performative forgetting of the body. Depending on the nature of the
way we become aware of (or practice awareness of) the body,
performance may be improved or disrupted. [ABSTRACT FROM

Resumen: Abstract: This paper contrasts conservative and liberal interpretations
of the extended mind hypothesis. The liberal view, defended here,
considers cognition to be socially extensive, in a way that goes
beyond the typical examples (involving notebooks and various
technologies) rehearsed in the extended mind literature, and in a way
that takes cognition to involve enactive processes (e.g., social
affordances), rather than functional supervenience relations. The
socially extended mind is in some cases constituted not only in social
interactions with others, but also in ways that involve institutional
structures, norms, and practices. Some of the common objections to
the extended mind are considered in relation to this liberal
interpretation. Implications for critical social theory are explored.

Resumen: In his article 'Folk Psychological and Phenomenological Accounts of
Social Perception' (this issue), Mitchell Herschbach raises some
critical questions concerning our phenomenological approach to
intersubjectivity. We welcome Herschbach's comments in the spirit of
constructive criticism, but also think that he has missed some crucial
aspects of our argumentation. We take this opportunity to amplify and
clarify our views. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

criticism of pathological social practices, requires normatively

grounded evaluative principles. In this article, we assess different
possibilities for such principles with focus on a model that takes
specific patterns of intersubjective interaction as its point of reference.
We argue that in order to understand the full significance of this
‘intersubjective turn’ for social philosophy, and to strengthen the
normative foundation of social philosophy, we need to distinguish
several levels of intersubjectivity and, in particular, focus on the
somewhat neglected level of primary intersubjectivity. The article will
discuss the account of primary intersubjectivity in Honneth’s work. We
show that Honneth’s account runs into difficulties, and drawing on
recent findings in developmental psychology, we suggest a rethinking
of elementary recognition in terms of ‘affective proximity’. This both
renders the account less susceptible to criticism and provides a
normative perspective that can effortlessly enter into interdisciplinary
collaboration. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Resumen: We examine the theory of the extended mind, and especially the
concept of the "parity principle" (Clark and Chalmers in Analysis
58.1:7-19, 1998), in light of Hegel's notion of objective spirit. This
unusual combination of theories raises the question of how far one can
extend the notion of extended mind and whether cognitive processing
can supervene on the operations of social practices and institutions.
We raise some questions about putting this research to critical use.

Resumen: The notion of an enactive system requires thinking about the brain in a
way that is different from the standard computational-representational
models. In evolutionary terms, the brain does what it does and is the
way that it is, across some scale of variations, because it is part of a
living body with hands that can reach and grasp in certain limited ways,
eyes structured to focus, an autonomic system, an upright posture,
etc. coping with specific kinds of environments, and with other people.
Changes to any of the bodily, environmental, or intersubjective
conditions elicit responses from the system as a whole. On this view,
rather than representing or computing information, the brain is better
conceived as participating in the action. [ABSTRACT FROM

Resumen: Abstract: This paper, in opposition to the standard theories of social
cognition found in psychology and cognitive science, defends the idea
that direct perception plays an important role in social cognition. The
two dominant theories, theory theory (TT) and simulation theory (ST),
both posit something more than a perceptual element as necessary for
our ability to understand others, i.e., to “mindread” or “mentalize.” In
contrast, certain phenomenological approaches depend heavily on the
concept of perception and the idea that we have a direct perceptual
grasp of the other person’s intentions, feelings, etc. This paper
explains precisely what the notion of direct perception means, offers
evidence from developmental studies, and proposes a
non-simulationist interpretation of the neuroscience of mirror systems.

Resumen: I present arguments against both explicit and implicit versions of the
simulation theory for intersubjective understanding. Logical,
developmental, and phenomenological evidence counts against the
concept of explicit simulation if this is to be understood as the
pervasive or default way that we understand others. The concept of
implicit (subpersonal) simulation, identified with neural resonance
systems (mirror systems or shared representations), fails to be the
kind of simulation required by simulation theory, because it fails to
explain how neuronal processes meet constraints that involve
instrumentality and pretense. Implicit simulation theory also fails to
explain how I can attribute a mental or emotion state that is different
from my own to another person. I also provide a brief indication of an
alternative interpretation of neural resonance systems. [ABSTRACT

BRUNER, Jerome S. (Jerome Seymour), 1915-
DONALD, Merlin
Resumen: Per Aage Brandt, commenting on a passage from Merlin Donald,
suggests that there is ‘a narrative aesthetics built into our mind.’ In
Donald, one can find an evolutionary account of this narrative
aesthetics. If there is something like an innate narrative disposition, it
is also surely the case that there is a process of development involved
in narrative practice. In this paper I will assume something closer to the
developmental account provided by Jerome Bruner in various works,
and Dan Hutto's account of how we learn narrative practices, and I'll
refer to this narrative aesthetics as a narrative competency that we
come to have through a developmental process. I will take narrative in
a wide sense, to include oral and written communications and
self-reports on experience. In this regard narrative is more basic than
story, and not necessarily characterized by the formal plot structure of
a story. A story may be told in many different ways, but always via
narrative discourse. Also, having narrative competency includes not
just abilities for understanding narratives, but also for narrative
understanding, which allows us to form narratives about things, events
and other people. To be capable of narrative understanding means to
be capable of seeing events in a narrative framework. [ABSTRACT

Resumen: An important shift is taking place in social cognition research, away
from a focus on the individual mind and toward embodied and
participatory aspects of social understanding. Empirical results already
imply that social cognition is not reducible to the workings of individual
cognitive mechanisms. To galvanize this interactive turn, we provide an
operational definition of social interaction and distinguish the different
explanatory roles – contextual, enabling and constitutive – it can play in
social cognition. We show that interactive processes are more than a
context for social cognition: they can complement and even replace
individual mechanisms. This new explanatory power of social
interaction can push the field forward by expanding the possibilities of
scientific explanation beyond the individual. [ABSTRACT FROM

Resumen: As a result of the 2001 legislation, No Child Left Behind elementary
schools across the United States focus has turned to testing and
accountability often neglecting arts in education. Despite numerous
studies of the benefits that the arts can have not only in the social-
emotional development of students but in conjunction with the recent
research that shows the arts effect on cognitive development these
programs are continually being cut. The purpose of this study is to put
the spotlight on the scientific evidence that connects a student's
involvement in arts education with the increase in cognitive
development. It is crucial to make this information widespread as it will
help to put weight behind the urgent need of policy reform and
monetary support so that every child is given the chance to experience
arts in schools.

Resumen: The writer discusses the concept of audio description (AD) in theater
and explores the significance of this concept in helping the visually
impaired enjoy a good theater experience. She notes that although
current standards and guidelines for AD vary in the range of
information they provide, by comparing the different existing
guidelines, four essential questions concerning the use of AD in theater
emerge: what should be described, when should it be described, how
should it be described, and how much should be described. The writer
explores each of these aspects within the context of cognitive
psychology and presents a cognitive approach model to better
understand how audio describers can make theater a more fulfilling
experience for AD audiences.

Descripción: This essay argues that cognitive linguistics-conceptual blending theory
(CBT) in particular-links language, cognition, and the body in ways that
impact practical and theoretical issues in performance. An unpacking
of the first sentence of Richard III demonstrates the use of CBT as a
tool for dramaturgical or textual analysis. Through an analysis of a
casting choice in Michael Almereyda's Hamlet, the essay argues that
CBT provides a way to understand what is meant when theatre
scholars or practitioners say that one thing 'works' and another does
not. The embodied interplay between actor/character and spectator is
illuminated by research on mirror neurons. The author argues that
mimesis is better understood as occurring between actor and
spectator, rather than actor and character. Finally, the essay
re-imagines what constitutes character-and its relationship to actor-in
light of research on phantom limbs.

Resumen: Science and theatre are generally thought to share no common
cognitive ground for the simple reason that the former appeals to the
intellect, whereas the latter appeals to the emotions. Contrary to this
view, I claim that like scientific texts, theatrical texts evince a cognitive
intent and that, despite obvious differences, both types show
