Argumentative Essays
An argumentative essay expresses an extended argument for a particular
thesis statement. Argumentative essays are by far the most common type
of essay to write at university. The vast majority of essays or papers you
write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both
rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments
about texts. Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on
the topic and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence,
evaluation and analysis
Expository Essays
Expository essays use research and critical thinking to explain
more about a topic. Newspaper articles are a type of expository
essay — they provide information to the reader in a concise, factual
way. Writing expository essays requires a straightforward outline,
evidence-based conclusions, and a strong thesis statement.
Descriptive Essays

particular topic. The author presents relevant facts, data, and
information to help readers understand the topic better.

news articles, encyclopedias, textbooks, scientific journals, and even
informative blogs.

writer's personal experiences.
Personal-narrative essays can be found in various types of writing:
including diaries, memoirs, articles, short stories, and even

Reflective Essays
A reflective essay is a piece of writing that reflects on your experiences. You
can write reflective essays about your life as a whole, any significant
experiences you've had or about something more specific. For example, you
may want to write about your time in education or a particular job. In this
kind of essay, you describe the experiences you want to discuss and the
impact they've had on you. You may also include how you've learned from
these experiences.
Synthesis Essays
A synthesis essay makes (or synthesizes) a claim based on outside sources. We
use synthesis essays to build strong arguments for our ideas.
In other words, if you give a thesis statement, but you don't provide any evidence
to back it up, it won't be very convincing. You have to synthesize a strong
argument using info from outside sources.
Definition Essays
A definition essay is one that explains a term, either by defining what it means or
by clarifying which meaning is intended when a word has several meanings. For
instance, a writer might need to define slicing to someone unfamiliar with golf or
the term koi to someone unfamiliar with tropical fish.
Analytical Essays
An analytical essay is an essay that meticulously and methodically
examines a single topic to draw conclusions or prove theories.
Although they are used in many fields, analytical essays are often
used with art and literature to break down works’ creative themes
and explore their deeper meanings and symbolism.
( type of essay involving an in-depth dissection of a text piece of art,
scientific theory, or other work.)
Evaluation Essays
Evaluation essays use a measured, unbiased approach to evaluating a work, topic, product, or
another subject. With sound evidence and reasoning, evaluation essays present the writer’s
opinion about the subject. You would write an evaluation essay to present an educated and
considered viewpoint, which should influence the reader when making up their own mind.
Process Essays
Process essays are a type of informational essay that explains how to do
something (its process). They include a short introduction and
conclusion, but the focus of the essay is on its steps and guiding the
