Genres and writing
Learning writing in the majority of cases is learning genres,
that is developing knowledge of the rules of organization and
the structure of integral texts. At the same time, genre may
also be defined as a type of a written or oral text with a
recognizable set of relatively stable features. Genres may
also be treated as textual realizations of discourse.
What are the different types
of writing genres?
There are various genres of writing in the
academic field. They all require you to develop a
set of academic writing skills somehow different
from each other. Some of these genres include:
Abstract, Essay, Posters, Case Studies, Reposrts,
Review Literature, Research Papers, Dissertation,
Theses, and Grant proposals.
Essays Genre
Essays are considered some of the most important genres of
academic writing. This is because they are considered effective
assessment tools in university and college. Markedly, there are
different types of essays that vary in rationale and length.

The key essay categories are:


1. Essay questions: These are usually part of examinations.
When answering the questions, you should ensure that you
clearly understand the informative part, the directive paper,
and the instructional part.
2. Response papers: These are short essays that seek your
reaction to one or numerous texts. They require you to read an
article or a book.
ESSAY GENRES (Types of Essay)
Narrative Essays
Narrative essays are also known as personal essays.
This essay is called that because it combines stories of
personal experience with arguments of an academic
or scientific nature. Therefore, narrative essays are
often written from a first-person perspective.

Argumentative Essays
An argumentative essay expresses an extended argument for a particular
thesis statement. Argumentative essays are by far the most common type
of essay to write at university. The vast majority of essays or papers you
write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both
rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments
about texts. Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on
the topic and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence,
evaluation and analysis
Expository Essays
Expository essays use research and critical thinking to explain
more about a topic. Newspaper articles are a type of expository
essay — they provide information to the reader in a concise, factual
way. Writing expository essays requires a straightforward outline,
evidence-based conclusions, and a strong thesis statement.

Descriptive Essays

A descriptive essay gives a vivid, detailed description of something—


generally a place or object, but possibly something more abstract like an
emotion. Descriptive essays give readers a more robust understanding of a
particular topic by fleshing it out with concrete details and figurative
language. After reading a descriptive essay, you should walk away with a
clear picture of the subject at hand, whether it's a historical episode, a
geographic location, or a work of art.
Persuasive Essays
A persuasive essay is a piece of writing to influence readers and
change their views about a topic.
Persuasive essays can be found in various types of writing:
newspaper editorials, opinion articles, speeches, advertisements,
even in the form of academic essays.

Informative Essays
An informative essay aims to provide information to readers about a
particular topic. The author presents relevant facts, data, and
information to help readers understand the topic better.

news articles, encyclopedias, textbooks, scientific journals, and even
informative blogs.
Personal Narrative Essays
A personal-narrative essay is a type of essay that focuses on the
writer's personal experiences.
Personal-narrative essays can be found in various types of writing:
including diaries, memoirs, articles, short stories, and even
personal blogs.

Reflective Essays
A reflective essay is a piece of writing that reflects on your experiences. You
can write reflective essays about your life as a whole, any significant
experiences you've had or about something more specific. For example, you
may want to write about your time in education or a particular job. In this
kind of essay, you describe the experiences you want to discuss and the
impact they've had on you. You may also include how you've learned from
these experiences.
Synthesis Essays
A synthesis essay makes (or synthesizes) a claim based on outside sources. We
use synthesis essays to build strong arguments for our ideas.
In other words, if you give a thesis statement, but you don't provide any evidence
to back it up, it won't be very convincing. You have to synthesize a strong
argument using info from outside sources.

Definition Essays
A definition essay is one that explains a term, either by defining what it means or
by clarifying which meaning is intended when a word has several meanings. For
instance, a writer might need to define slicing to someone unfamiliar with golf or
the term koi to someone unfamiliar with tropical fish.
Analytical Essays
An analytical essay is an essay that meticulously and methodically
examines a single topic to draw conclusions or prove theories.
Although they are used in many fields, analytical essays are often
used with art and literature to break down works’ creative themes
and explore their deeper meanings and symbolism.

Compare and contrast Essays


Compare and contrast essays are analytical essays that examine
how two subjects are similar and different. As in the words
‘compare’ and ‘contrast’, this type of essay intend to evaluate
reader’s understanding of different objects in respect to each other.
Cause and Effect Essays
Cause and effect essays, is essay that showing the relationship between
an event (causes) for the existence or occurrence of something and its
consequences (effects).

Evaluation Essays
Evaluation essays use a measured, unbiased approach to evaluating a work, topic, product, or
another subject. With sound evidence and reasoning, evaluation essays present the writer’s
opinion about the subject. You would write an evaluation essay to present an educated and
considered viewpoint, which should influence the reader when making up their own mind.

Process Essays
Process essays are a type of informational essay that explains how to do
something (its process). They include a short introduction and
conclusion, but the focus of the essay is on its steps and guiding the
reader through the process.
