Q 1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow it:

Birbal was the favourite minister of king Akbar. The king's brother-in-law,

Hussain Khan, was very jealous of him. He wanted Birbal's job and asked his

sister, the queen, to help him get it. Out of love for her brother, the queen said
to Akbar, "I want you to make my brother minister at your court in place of

Birbal."

The king was perplexed. "How can I tell Birbal to leave his job for no reason?"

he asked.

After thinking for some time, the queen said: "Ask him to do something that is

impossible. When he is not able to do it, tell him to get out. When you are in
the garden tomorrow, tell Birbal to bring me to you. I will refuse to come, so
you can dismiss him."

The next day Akbar sat sadly in his garden. When Birbal asked him why he was

upset, he said, "Your queen, my begum is angry with me and refuses to talk to

me. If you bring her to me here, I'll give you a prize. But if you don't, I'll take

away your job."

Birbal went to the queen and said: "Begum sahiba, Jahanpanah wants you in

the garden. Please..." Before he could finish his sentence, a messenger came
and whispered something in Birbal's ears. The queen tried hard to listen but the

only words she could hear were: “She is beautiful.” Birbal turned to the queen

and said: "Forgive me, Begum sahiba. You don't have to come to the garden

now. The situation has changed."

Ignoring Birbal's words, the curious queen quickly ran to the garden. She was
surprised to see the king alone. The king was also surprised and said, "You told

me you would not come. Why are you here?'

The queen told him about Birbal and the messenger. The king was very amused.
He sent for Birbal and gave him a reward.

Q 2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow it:

1. Migration is the movement of people from one permanent home to another.

This movement changes the nature of the population of a place.

2. Sometimes people move from one country to another. People who leave

their country are said to emigrate while those who move into another country
are called immigrants. Immigrants add to the total population whereas

emigrants are subtracted from the total. The movement of people can also

occur within a country. In many developing countries, large numbers of people

have moved from the countryside to the cities in recent years. This is called
rural to urban migration.

3. People may want to move out of a place for many reasons such as few jobs,
war, natural disaster, famine, etc. These are called 'push factors'. Better

opportunities for work, health care, education and a safer living environment

draw people to a place. These are called 'pull factors'. Sometimes, people may

be forced to leave a place because of political or religious conflicts. Such

migrants are called asylum seekers.

4. Migration can bring both disadvantages and disadvantages to the country

that is losing people. migration reduces pressure on jobs and resources. The

migrants send home money. They may return at some stage with newer skills.
But on the flip side, it is the skilled that may leave leading to 'brain drain'.

All Rights Reserved © Manish Verma, for more Notes visit https://www.manishvermanotes.com/
Also, the size of the country's potential work force gets reduced. And gender

imbalance may result as it is typically men who leave in the search of

employment.

5. For the host country too, migration has benefits as well as drawbacks.
Migration helps to reduce labour shortages. Further, migrants are more

prepared to take on low paid, low skilled jobs. Their presence also results in a

richer and more diverse culture. However, migration also results in

overcrowding and increase in the cost of services such as health care and
education. Also, there can be disagreements between people of different

religions and cultures.

your convenience. Below are five sub-headings. Match each sub- heading with

the paragraph it applies to.

(B) Describe the popular hill station of Kodaikanal in a paragraph of 100 to 150

words using the information given below:

Area : 21.7 sq. Km

Altitude : 2,343 meters

Population : 20,446

Tourist season : April to June, September to October

Clothing : Summer: light woollens;

Winter: heavy woollens

Connectivity:

 Nearest airport: Madurai (120 kms)

 Nearest railhead: Kodaikanal Road (80 kms);

 Direct buses from Madurai, Kodaikanal Road, Palani, Tiruchirappalli and

Coimbatore

Places of Interest:

 Kodaikanal lake: the main attraction of the hill station, spread over 24

hectares, good for boating

 Coaker's walk: a one km long walk along a steep slope, offering nice views
 Pillar Rocks: over 100-metre-high rocks, 7 kms from Kodaikanal lake, with

picnic spots and caves near them.

Answer - Kodaikanal is a small hilly town located on Palani Hills of Western Ghats in

the Dindigul district about 7001 ft above from mean sea level. It is sandwiched

between the Parappar and Gundar Valleys and largely covered with thick forest of
Eucalyptus, cypress, acacia and Shola Trees. Kodaikanal is one of the most famous hill

stations in India due to its beautiful scenic view. This town is an address of many

adventurous forests, enhancing waterfalls and ubiquitous grassland like a green

carpet lying on the earth and lots of lovely flower.

A special type of flower name kurinji is very famous as it blossoms only once in

twelve years. Kodaikannal's area is 21.7 km², its altitude is 2,343 m. It has a

population of 20,446 people. It's most visited in April to June & September to
October. Its nearest airport is Madurai & railhead is Kodaikannal Road. It has direct

buses from Madurai, Kodaikanal Road, Palani, Tiruchirappalli & Coimbatore.

It's famous for-

Kodaikanal Lake

Situated in the heart of town, this is an artificial lake built by the Sir Vere Henry

Levinge in 1863, the collector of Madurai at that time. Spread over 60 acres, it is the

perfect spot for some R&R. You can indulge in some cycling or boating while here.
There are many shopping centres as well near the lake. See if you can spot the flower
‘kurunji’ - it can be found near the lake. And it's quite rare in that it grows once in

every twelve years.

Coaker’s Walk

This path on the edge of mountains will give you a wide-angle view of the town and

lush green valleys. The best part is you can witness the soothing, never-ending

rolling of cloud beds from here.

Dolphin’s Nose

To reach here, you have to trek for about a kilometre from Vattakanal Hamlet.

Dolphin’s Nose is nothing but a vivid peak shaped like the nose of a dolphin. There
are many viewpoints in between where you can get stunning views of the landscape.

If you feel hungry, hit up any of the eateries here for some mountainside Maggi and

juice.

17th June 2015

Dear Mohammed,

I returned from Kandla a couple of days back. I want to tell you about some interesting
people I met on my journey.

There was a family from Bengal whose two children kept on chirping continuously. They
were very cute and very friendly. Both, the boy and the girl, were studying in a good
school in Kolhapur and were very clever indeed. I enjoyed teaching them a few tricks of
my own.

There was also a newly married couple from Gujarat who wanted to share each of their
food items with us. We really had a grand time enjoying a typical Gujarati fare all
through the journey.

The most interesting pair was a Maharashtrian elderly couple hotly arguing all the way.
But you could see through their arguments that they were extremely fond of each
other. Their conversation, of course, was very interesting.
This journey was indeed highly amusing.
Do tell me about your trip to Mahabaleshwar in your next letter.

Your sincere friend,

Sahil

Q 8. Write a review of a movie or a web series you recently watched.

Answer: - It’s a classic movie that everyone loves. Dangal is both inspiring and

entertaining Dangal Story: When Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir), a wrestler from

Haryana, loses hope of having a son, he trains his daughters Geeta (Fatima) and
Babita (Sanya) to make wrestling history, thus breaking the taboo of Indian women

participating in a sport thus far dominated by men.

Dangal Review: In the story department, Dangal offers few surprises because Geeta

and Babita's historic wins at the Commonwealth Games and following

championships are common knowledge. However, this screen adaptation serves as a

recap of their arduous journey and it vigorously recaptures their stubborn father's

resolve to make them professional wrestlers against the odds. Since it encapsulates

the historic wins of the Phogats, who brought India glory, the film is also bound to

inspire more women to seriously consider kushti as a sport.

What works wonderfully here is the writing. Director Nitesh Tiwari, along with Piyush

Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Mehrotra should be complimented for their tongue-
in-cheek quality, peppered with humour and several poignant father-daughter

emotions all through. Of course, a little bit is lost in translation because of the

Haryanvi twang. But, messages on our obsession with the male child (prevalent since

the dark ages), myopic stand on bringing up our daughters and the administration’s
pathetic disposition towards sports, are loud and clear.

It is to the film’s credit that though Geeta and Babita’s wins are documented, it still

manages to engage the viewer with the wrestling tournaments and bring patriotic

emotions to the fore. Most importantly, Dangal scores with its first-rate

performances.

An ungainly Aamir (22 kilos heavier) with grey hair is pitch-perfect as the ziddi yet

sensitive parent. The 51-year-old actor should be complimented for experimenting

with his roles, unlike his contemporaries who prefer to play safe.

All Rights Reserved © Manish Verma, for more Notes visit https://www.manishvermanotes.com/
Sakshi as his wife, is restrained, yet effective. And, the debutants Fatima and Sanya

are easily this year’s best finds.

Cast: Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim,

Suhani Bhatnagar, Ritwik Sahore, Aparshakti Khurana, Girish Kulkarni

Director: Nitesh Tiwari

A sports biopic, Dangal totally justifies the real-life story of Haryana wrestler who

trained his older two daughters in the art of wrestling and turned them into
champions. The film delivers a very important message with such sincerity that it just

doesn’t overwhelm the storytelling.

Messages on our obsession with the male child, bigoted stand on bringing up our

daughters and the administration’s wretched attitude towards sports, are loud and

clear. Amir Khan is a pure finesse who can go to any extent to completely erase the
boundary which detaches the actor from the character? His deliberate gaits to match

with the demand of the role as an aspiring wrestler with muscles and a passionate

father with a heavy belly can easily convince you that the movie has really covered an

era while making. In the male dominant state of Haryana, where the girl child is still
unacceptable in most of the families, there cannot be a more important message.

The belief that real-life Phogat showed in his girls, as they went on to win honor is

definitely setting an example.

Dangal is a film that is both inspiring and entertaining. Since it highlights the glorious

wins of the Phogats, the film is also bound to encourage more women to seriously

take up kushti as a sport.

I know it is a bit long. But it’s nice.

Q 9. You visited your favourite holiday destination. Write a diary entry about

your trip.

Answer:

29 December 2021

Wednesday 2:40 PM

Dear Diary,

As usual, today I am going to share my whole favourite holiday destination

experience with you. It was a glorious day for me. Shimla was my favourite holiday

destination in India. It is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh. I visited it along
with my friends in summer. Before arrival to the beautiful Shimla I reserved the hotel

through a tour operator company. Thanks to this tour operator for arranging such a

luxurious hotel at a reasonable price. It was a wonderful summer journey of friends.

There were many dazzling and wonderful attractive spots to watch like Jakhu Hill,

Lord Hanuman temple and local handicraft museum. Jakhu Hill is a mind-blowing hill

station and according to the tour operator the hill station is safest trekking place in
India. Next morning, we had gone on a trekking trip, really the trip was

unforgettable. Apart from trekking we had also enjoyed shopping. Next day we had

visited Tara Devi, according to local belief the Shimla tour remains incomplete if a

tourist never visits Goddess Tara Devi temple.

We also had ultimate fun in a place called Kufri which is around 16 km from Shimla.
This place has beautiful natural sceneries and we also enjoyed Yak riding at Kufri.

One thing we missed in Shimla is the Ice Skating which is prominently open

December to February.

We also enjoyed an evening in the Lakkar Bazaar. This Bazaar is a wood market in

Shimla that has a lot of wood items that includes beautiful articles like walking sticks
and decorative articles. We bought a few precious Wooden items back to home.
