FOREWORD

As with earlier editions, this handbook has sought to provide material directed at students, particularly
those entering the engineering profession. At the same time, however, it has introduced material
relevant not only to engineering but to other technical disciplines as well.

In this 1993 edition, the aim has been to produce a handbook to serve students as a reference in all
areas related to the production and interpretation of engineering and other technical drawings. Care
was taken to see that the material in this handbook conformed to that set out in the relevant, current,
Australian Standards but, in the few cases not covered in an appropriate Standard, accepted industry
practice was adopted.
The work of editing this Handbook has been made easier by the previous work of Professor Roth and
Mr Van Haeringen and the contribution made by Standards Australia both in the provision of drawings
from relevant Standards and the support from their staff. My thanks to the others who have
contributed, in particular, I record my appreciation to:
- Mr Peter Agapow of the Queensland Electricity Commission for his work on Chapters 16 and 17;
- Mr Arvind Shrivistava, Director of AMTC, Monash University, for his input to Chapter 8.
This has been a most satisfying task and I hope that students, at all levels, will find this handbook an
indispensable aid as they seek to master the skills and knowledge necessary for effective design
communication.
