MUSIC LESSON NOTE FOR WEEK 1.

TOPIC: ACCIDENTALS.
An accidental can be defined as a symbol or sign used to alter (change) the
pitches, positions and letter-names of notes.
Accidentals occur when either a sharp, flat or natural sign affects any single
note or notes within the music. Accidentals are written as symbols (signs).

TYPES OF ACCIDENTALS
1. The sharp sign.
2 .The flat sign.
3. The natural sign.
4. The double sharp sign.
5. The double flat sign.

1. The Sharp sign (#): The sharp sign placed before a note raises the pitch of a
note by a semitone.
2 .The flat sign (b): The flat sign placed before a note lowers or reduces the pitch
of a note by a semitone.
3. The natural sign (): The natural sign placed before a note restores the note
previously sharpened or flattened, to its original pitch (position). It can also be
used to nullify or neutralize the effects of accidentals on the affected note or
notes.
4. The double sharp sign (X): The double sharp sign placed before a note raises
the pitch (sound) of a note by a tone.

5. The double flat sign (bb): The double flat sign placed before a note reduces or
lowers the pitch of a note by a tone.
