There are rumours that overtime it has changed. They have ‘submitted a series of data value to you for analysis because they cannot make sense of them. They are ‘visual people the keep insisting, and would like you to report back on whether the density ‘of methanol is still the same as is publicly believed and accepted. To demonstrate the density they would like you to turn their reasurements into a visual representation for them, and show through calculations if the rumours are true. You have some help on your side with a friend having laid out a step-by-step guide to get the scientists what they want. Good luck! Page 1 of 8 Scanned with CamScanner Neo CH11U01P02 - Rev. Jul, 2018 WCLN.ca: Instructions The goal of this lab is to help you gain a better understanding of density. You will also learn a bit more about graphing and the process of creating a best-fit line. You will be provided with mass and volume data for both water and methanol and be asked to determine the density of those 2 liquids from that data using a graph. Finally you will be asked to answer some questions about your results. 1. 4, Data: For this lab you are given a set of experiential data of mass and volume of a substance. Because measuring the mass of a substance all on it's own is very difficult (why do you think?) you must take the mass of the vessel that the liquid was in into consideration when analyzing your data. Once you have the true mass and volume of each, you should be able to proceed to the next step — graphing your data. Graphing: ‘When data is presented in tables with lot’s of numbers and letters it can be difficult to interpret ‘of make sense of. There are many different ways in which scientists (and many other people) graph to get a sense of what the data is telling us. Do you think graphing is the best way to interpret the results from this lab? What are ‘some other ways that you could make sense of these numbers? (This is just food for thought). Slope + Density: ‘Once we have a graph (especially a linear graph) we can gather information from it. The slope ofa line often tells us important information. In this case it happens to reflect the density of your liquid. You will calculate the slope of your line (remember slope from grade 10 math?), and interpret those results in the Questions section next. Questions: In this section you will answer a series of questions in based on your results from your data, graph, and slope/density calculations to further understand and interpret your results. Percent Error: You will use a percent error formula to determine how close your results are when compared to the standardized accepted value of density for your two substances. This Project will be graded according to the marking rubric. Page 2 of 8 Scanned with CamScanner ur it onto the scale it simply flows off.
