of significant and rapidly
increasing change. As a result
of the Industrial Revolution,
enormous changes in
manufacturing, transport, and
technology began to affect
how people lived, worked,
and traveled throughout
Europe and America. These
changes have also an effect
on the world of art. The art
movements of the 19th
century to the 20th century
captured and expressed all
these and more. Specifically,
these were the movements
known as Impressionism and
Expressionism. While earlier
periods of art had quite set
 conventions as to the style,
technique, and treatment of
their subjects, impressionist
and expressionist conveyed
their ideas and feelings in
bold, innovative ways. These
were the exciting precursors
of modern art of the 21st
century.

Expressionism. Whereas earlier artistic periods
established the conventions of their style,
technique, and treatment of subjects, the
Impressionists and Expressionists
communicated ideas and emotions.
Themselves in bold and innovative ways. They
are fascinating forerunners of 21st century
modern art.

modern art. The style, which had its start in
Europe in the middle of the 1800s, offered
innovative methods for using the elements of
art, notably color and texture, in ways that

Rather than creating an accurate representation

of the topic, impressionism was more
interested in conveying the subject’s mood or
