THERMAL TURBOMACHINES
Assignment-1
1. Express sound velocity in terms of bulk modules
2. Define Mach Number,Mach cone and Mach angle.
3. Draw a neat sketch showing the variation of pressure along the convergent divergent nozzle.
4. If the flow is sub-sonic, how area of cross sections of nozzle and diffuser will vary?
5. State adiabatic energy equation and Express the ratio of stagnation temperature to static
pressure in terms of Mach number for isentropic flow.
6. Give three examples of Fanno flow? Show three Fanno curves on the T-S co-ordinates at 3
mass flow densities.
7. Draw Fanno curve on h-s plane and prove that at maximum entropy point, the velocity of
fluid is sonic velocity.
8. Prove that at maximum entropy point on Rayleigh line, the velocity of fluid is sonic.
9. A conical diffuser has entry and exit diameters of 15 cm and 30 cm respectively. The
pressure, temperature and velocity of air at entry are 0.69 bar, 340 K and 180 m/s
respectively. Determinei) the pressure and velocity at exit, ii) stagnation pressure and
stagnation temperature and iii) force exerted on the diffuser walls.

10. The stagnation temperature of air of a nozzle is 375 K, while stagnation pressure is 0.1 MPa.
The velocity of air at entry of nozzle is 180 m/s. Calculate static temperature, static pressure,
Mach number, sonic velocity, and mass flow rate of air if diameter of nozzle at entry is
200mm.

11. If the diameter of a long duct is 200mm, while its length is 300m. The entry pressure and
temperature are 3.5 bar and 40oC respectively and the coefficient of friction 0.005. Mach
number at entry is 0.15, determine the pressure, Mach number, temperature at exist,
stagnation pressure loss and verify the exit Mach number through exit velocity and
temperatures.
