Mother Teresa, whose original name was Agnes Gouxha Bejaxhic was born in August 26.
1910 in Skopje. in Yogoslavai. She was an Albanian Roman Catholic nun with Indian
citizenship who founded the missionaries of charity in Kolkata in 1950. For over 45 year she
ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying while guiding the missionaries of charity's
expansion. first throughout India and then in other countries.
At the age of twelve, she decided to spread the love of Christ. After 6 years she left her
parental home and joined the sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in
India. On May 24, 1931 in India, & he took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 she
taught at St. Mary's High School in Kolkata. In 1950, she received permission from Holy see
to start her own order, The Missionaries of Charity." whose primary task was to love and
care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the society became on
international religious family by a decree of Pope Paul VI. By 1970's she was internationally
famed as humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless. She won the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1979 and India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 for her
humanitarian work.
Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity continued to expand, and at the time of her death it
was operating 610 missions in 123 countries. including hospices and homes for people with
HIV/AIDS. leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counselling
programmes, orphanages and schools. Because of her poor and declining health. She
stepped down as head of the order and on March 13.1997 sister Nirmala was chosen to
succeed her as leader of the missionaries of Charity. On September 5, 1997, at the age of 87,
the best loved women of the century passed away.
