NOSE WHEEL STEERING - INSPECTION/CHECK

TASK 32-50-00-710
1. Nose Wheel Power Steering Unit Centering Springs Operational Check
NOTE: This test makes sure that the centering springs on the steering unit spool-sleeve assembly function
correctly.
A. Tools and Equipment
(1) Nose Gear Strut Restrainer - CJMD332-002
(2) Nose Jack - 02-0526-0110
(3) Main Jacks - 02-1032-0111
(4) Jack Pads - 5520151-2
(5) Hydraulic Service Unit - Commercially Available
(6) External Power Unit - Commercially Available
B. Nose Wheel Power Steering Unit Centering Springs Operational Check (Refer to Figure 601).
(1) Install the CJMD332-002 nose gear strut restrainer to limit strut extension to 7.00 inches (177.8 mm) maximum. Refer to
Model 650 Illustrated Tool and Equipment Manual, Chapter 32, Nose Landing Gear for installation instructions.
(2) Jack the airplane until the nose gear tire is off the ground. Refer to Chapter 7, Jacking - Maintenance Practices for
instructions.
NOTE: Two greased plates can be put under the tire in lieu of jacking the airplane and using the strut
restrainer to let the nose gear strut turn.
(3) Remove the cotter pin, nut and bolt from the nose gear steering unit clevis assembly as shown.
(a) Discard the cotter pin and nut and retain the bolt for reinstallation.
(4) Disengage the GEAR CONTROL circuit breaker and attach a tag to the landing gear control handle that states:
WARNING: Do not retract landing gear - maintenance in progress.
(5) Connect a hydraulic ground service unit to the ground service connection system and apply hydraulic power (3000 PSI) to
the airplane.
(6) Apply external Direct Current (DC) power to the airplane.
(7) Make sure that the nose wheel steering system is activated; engage the PWR STEER circuit breaker on the pilot's side
console circuit breaker panel and press the NOSE WHL STEERING switch light on the pedestal so that it illuminates.
WARNING: The following procedure requires the nose gear steering unit linkage be manually activated to
command the steering unit to turn. Make sure that personnel are clear of the rotating lower strut, tire
and wheel when performing this test.
(8) Manually move the lower end of the clevis assembly to the right, causing the nose wheel to turn to the right. At
approximately mid-travel, release the clevis and verify that the nose wheel abruptly stops turning.
(9) Manually move the lower end of the clevis assembly to the left, causing the nose wheel to turn past the center position
toward the left. At approximately midtravel, release the clevis and verify that the nose wheel abruptly stops turning.
NOTE: If the nose wheel does not stop abruptly when the clevis assembly is released, the nose gear
steering unit must be removed for overhaul.
(10) If the nose wheel does stop abruptly when the clevis assembly is released, the nose gear steering unit centering springs
function satisfactorily. Reinstall the existing bolt in the clevis assembly and link and secure with a new nut and cotter pin.

cracks, corrosion and other damage.

(3) Check the pulleys for misalignment and freedom of rotation.
(4) Check the cables for proper routing, fraying, broken strands and corrosion or damage.
B. Nose Wheel Steering Cables Tension Check.
(1) Make sure that the nose wheel is in approximately the center position for the tension check.
(2) Place tensiometer on the steering cables at a convenient location just forward of where the cables route through the
forward pressure bulkhead cable fairleads.
(3) Measure the cable tension. As an example, at 21.11°C (70°F), cable tension should be 25 inch-pounds, +3 or -3 inch-
pounds (2.82 Nm, +0.3 or -0.3 Nm). Refer to Chapter 32, Nose Wheel Steering - Maintenance Practices for the cable
tension rigging chart for cable tension vs. ambient temperature.
(4) If cable tension is out of tolerance, refer to Chapter 32, Nose Wheel Steering - Maintenance Practices, Nose Wheel
Steering System Rigging, for rigging procedures.
