Yan Jinhai, former acting chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government, was
appointed the region’s chairman at the Fifth Session of the region’s 11th people’s congress

An ethnic Tibetan, Yan was born in 1962 in Qinghai Province. Following his gradu-
ation from Qinghai Minzu University with a bachelor’s degree in Chinese language and
literature in 1982, he has been working in Qinghai for almost four decades, in schools, edu-

Qinghai.
In January 2021, he was appointed secretary of the Communist

After a large coal mine was opened there in 1958,

One of those who flocked there to work in the

Qitaihe from the provincial capital of Harbin, bringing
with him a pair of skates. Each winter, he volunteered
to maintain the outdoor ice rink of a middle school in
order to have the chance to skate on it.
In 1972, Meng, then 21, won several titles in a lo-

as a coach by the municipal sports authority, tasked
